McDOWELL, Professor Banks Jr.
Professor Banks McDowell, Jr. passed away on February 18, 2001, at his home in Kingston, Ontario, after a battle with cancer. Born in Houston, Texas, on June 1, 1930, his family moved shortly thereafter to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was raised. He graduated from Will Rogers High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948. He received a B.A. in history (1951) and an LL.B. (1954) from the University of Tulsa, followed by an LL.M. (1955) and S.J.D. (1956) from the University of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957, stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Frankfurt, Germany. After his discharge in 1957, he studied at the University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany, where he met his future wife, the former Ellen Elsa Christiana Siegmund. Professor McDowell was admitted to the Oklahoma bar in 1954 and the Massachusetts bar in 1971. During 1958-1959, he was employed as an attorney with Rhodes, Crowe, Heironymus and Holloway, Tulsa, Oklahoma. From January, 1958, to August 1959, he was an Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Tulsa. He taught at Boston University School of Law, Boston Massachusetts, from 1959-1982, as an Assistant Professor until 1964, Professor of Law until 1970 and as Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Law from 1970 to 1982. In 1982, he became Professor of Law at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, and was named Distinguished Professor of Law in 1993. He was a Visiting Professor at Syracuse University in 1986-1987. During the spring semester of 1990-1991, he spent a sabbatical leave at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. After retiring from fulltime teaching in January, 1995, Professor McDowell and his wife moved to Kingston, Ontario, where he continued to write. He is survived by his wife, Ellen E. C. McDowell, Kingston, Ontario, two children, Carolyn McDowell, Kansas City, Missouri and David McDowell, Kansas City, Kansas, a brother, Sam McDowell, Anna Maria, Florida, and his step-mother Johnnie McDowell, Aberdeen, Mississippi. Friends will be received at the Robert J. Reid & Sons Funeral Home, 309 Johnson Street, (at Barrie Street) Kingston, Ontario, on Friday, February 23, from 12:00-1:00 p.m., prior to a memorial service to be held in ;The Chapel on the Corner at 1:00 o'clock.
