It is with heavy hearts that our family sadly announces Joan's passing, at the Mariposa House Hospice in Orillia, on Wednesday, 4th of September 2024, with family at her side, at a day and time of her choosing. She will be deeply missed by her children, Mike (Andra) Barr and Patty (Graham) Ascough; grandchildren, Jonathan (Anelle) Ascough, Andrew Ascough, Kristopher Barr, Meghan Barr; and great-grandson, Robert Ascough. Daughter of Catherine 'Kay' and William 'Donald' Oates; elder sister, to Mary (Peter) Fordham and Tom (Mary-Ellen) Oates. Joan's partner in life of 58 years Brian, sadly pre-deceased her in July 2023 and we will miss them both terribly. Joan and Brian loved to travel the world, built several homes, and moved a number of times through both Ontario, Quebec and Florida. They ultimately settled back to Orillia, a city which had stolen Joan's heart and where they first started their married life and had their two children. Joan provided a happy home and was delighted in the company of both close and extended family and took great pleasure in watching them all grow and succeed. She was passionate about her gardens, views of the water, sunsets, word games and also loved playing golf earlier in her life. Joan actively supported charitable organizations, and was surrounded with love up to the end by her family and her many friendships that she had cultivated over the years. A visitation to celebrate the life of Joan Barr will be held at Carson Funeral Home - L. Doolittle Chapel, 54 Coldwater St. E Orillia, (705)326-3595, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mariposa House Hospice (
https://www.mariposahousehospice.com/) or to the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital (
https://www.osmh.on.ca/), reflecting Joan's decision to make a positive impact on her local community. Joan's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her doctors, staff and volunteers at the Mariposa House Hospice. The establishment of the Hospice was strongly supported by both Brian and Joan and though we never thought that we would need their services quite so soon, they provided exceptional surroundings and support for our mother in her final days. As we bid farewell to Joan, let us remember the smiles, the support and the love. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Online condolences may be left at
