BARBARA FLEMING Obituary

October 24, 1936 – August 22, 2025 It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of Barbara Anne Fleming. Barbara was the daughter of George Wallace Thom and Edith Thom. She was brought up in North Toronto by her Grandmother Lucas and her mother, as her father died when she was nine months old. Barbara was married in 1963 to David, and recently they celebrated their 62nd anniversary. They raised two sons, John (Roshni) and George. There was only one grandson, Tej. Barbara attended Eglinton Park Public School and played on the volleyball team. She always participated in sports. She enjoyed running and placed first in her age group. She participated in the city meets in many track and field events. In grades three and four, Barbara painted murals and was selected to have free art lessons at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She remained a member of the AGO throughout her life. Barbara went to camp at age nine and learned to swim in the Red Cross program. Later she became a Red Cross Royal Life Saving Instructor and taught for a few years. At age 17, she earned the Royal Life Saving's Society Distinction Award. She attended Northern Secondary School and enrolled in business and commercial. She continued to swim and compete, and won the Saunder's Cup in Grade 12. Following her graduation, Barbara worked in the legal field as a legal secretary, until she got married and moved to Etobicoke. Working in the community, she was Akala of a cub pack of 40 little boys at Eglinton-St.George's United Church for two years. Barbara belonged to Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and one of the activities was to raise funds by selling programs at Toronto Argonaut games. Her uncle, Gordon Thom, played for the Argos. Barbara and David joined Lawrence Park Community Church in 1971, and both have been active in the church ever since. In 1972, Barbara was asked by the United Church Women President to become involved with People and Organizations in North Toronto. Until recently she has been connected with P.O.I.N.T., serving on several committees. All the Fleming family joined the Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club in 1972. Barbara became the Chair of the large tennis section for three years, stepping down to get a replacement hip. She really missed her friends and playing tennis. Barbara joined the Garden Club of Toronto in 1999, and worked in Communications for ten years until the Newsletter was computerized. She then joined the Program Committee, which prepares and serves lunches. For over 25 years, during the month of August, Barbara delivered meals to needy people representing "Meals-on-Wheels," prepared by Yorkminster Park Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Lawrence Park Community Church, or a Charity of Your Choice in memory of Barbara, would be appreciated. Visitation on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. West (two lights west of Yonge St.). Service will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd, 11 a.m. at Lawrence Park Community Church, 2180 Bayview Ave., followed by reception in the community hall of the church. Interment, Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
