BARBARA HOROWITZ Obituary

Barbara Horowitz died peacefully, on February 11, 2026, in Victoria, British Columbia, at the age of 94. Born in Montreal to Samuel and Grace (Midvidy) Rosen, Barbara graduated from McGill University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She met Myer in 1956 when they both participated in a school board production, and they married a few months later. Barbara continued to teach until her daughters were born, after which she chose to stay home to raise them. She was a constant and much loved presence in their lives. In 1969, the family moved to Edmonton and quickly met a group of newcomers who became like an extended family, creating lifelong bonds that remain to this day. Barbara was a devoted partner to Myer in all his endeavours, hosting many gatherings while he was Dean of Education and attending numerous convocations, university and alumni events while he served as president of the University. After Myer's retirement, they relocated to Victoria where they spent many happy years. Barbara was active in the community throughout her life and enjoyed the arts, music, and many crafts, including knitting and quilting, which she continued up until her death. She was also an avid reader, a member of the Jane Austen Society and continued to challenge herself by taking a continuing education class each session. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Myer; her parents; and her brother, Allen. She is survived by her daughters, Carol and Deborah; her sister, Greta; her sisters-in-law, Shirley, Lillian, and Jean; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her, including her kind neighbours and quilting group friends. According to her wishes, a small graveside service will be held at the Jewish Cemetery in Victoria this Sunday at 1 p.m.

As regional coordinator of JASNA Victoria, I share my condolences regarding Barbara's passing. Barbara was a great friend and member of our little society, and I, as well as many of our members who knew her, will miss her very much.

It was always nice to see Barbara and Myer, and although we hadn't seen Barbara in recent years, she did keep in touch and often did make an appearance during some of our virtual events.

I could usually count on Barbara being the first one to respond with a 'thank you' most times I sent out an email update to our membership!

I'm so glad that Jane Austen brought us together.

Jane and I were deeply saddened to learn of Barbara's passing. We were good friends of Myer and Barbara, for me dating all the way back to my MA studies at McGill when Myer was head of Ed Admin and he and Barbara entertained the grad students. Myer and Barbara were a fabulous couple and we send our deepest sympathies to Carol and Debbie. Ross Paul & Jane Brindley, Vancouver

Barbara and I were both in the Jane Austen group some years ago. She was always such an intelligent contributor plus I remember one instance where we discussed orders of precedence in JA novels. One member, Jim, added that it was the same when bringing cows home at night on the Sask. farm. Witty Barbara said that precedence remained an important issue in academic processions as well.
When I wrote a profile on our Joan Austen-Leigh for the JASNA newsletter, Barbara sent me a note with her very generous appreciation of the article. I have never forgotten that generosity or her good-spirited appreciation and analyses of all things Jane Austen. And your father would come along for the Christmas luncheons at the Union Club, with his cheerful good humour too.
Such an admirable couple.
