Barbara SPRATT Obituary

BARBARA ELAINE SPRATT (nee Linttell) passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the age of 91. Elaine had a razor sharp memory and charmed us with her witty stories. Her crystal blue eyes lit up our world. Beloved mother of Richard (Diane), Chris (Maureen), Jill (Tyler Stewart), Nancy Spratt, and mother-in-law to Dale Dean, predeceased by her husband Donald (1999) and daughter Jenn (2019). Adored by 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandkids who affectionately knew her as GG. Born August 9, 1932, Elaine was the eldest child of Stuart and Olive Linttell and older sister to Margaret (Bob Robertson), Janet (Jack Houlahan), Graham (Krystine) and Jeffery. Elaine spent her formative years in Ottawa on Piccadilly Avenue, in the home built by her parents. During those early years, Elaine could be found with her sisters, skiing at Camp Fortune and on the water at the Ottawa Water Ski Club. As a teen, Elaine attended Nepean High School where she was part of the co-ed cheer squad and played basketball, just like many of her great grandchildren do today. During the Second World War she handed out war ration coupons at her father's grocery store (W. J. Linttell and Sons). She modelled for Morgan's department store and worked in a top secret job on Canada's supersonic jet, the Avro Arrow. Around this time, Elaine met Donald Ernest Spratt of Toronto, and after a short courtship, they married in a candlelight ceremony in Ottawa. Over the years Don and Elaine raised their five children in multiple cities across Canada including Ottawa, North Bay, Dartmouth, Moncton, London, and Kingston. Despite multiple moves, summers were always spent at the family cottage in MacLaren's Landing on the Ottawa River. In 1974, The Spratt's settled at Maple Crest Farm near Fitzroy Harbour, where Don was a farmer and realtor and Elaine became a successful interior decorator. Starting at Sears followed by Morgan's Grant in Kanata , she eventually opened Elaine's Decor in Arnprior. Later, during her retirement Elaine loved to travel and explore the world taking her across North America to Europe, Japan, Indonesia, and safari in Africa. She told us though, that her favorite place was the beach at MacLaren's Landing with family and friends. Elaine loved to read and paint, and her home was decorated with many colourful works of art inspired by her travels, especially to Africa, nature, and family. Elaine was also an avid knitter, creating much coveted Christmas stockings, scarves, and sweaters for family members. These skills would continue with the Hera Mission of Canada, improving the lives of Kenyan women and children. Elaine would be celebrated as Dani (Grandma) Elaine for the thousands of dolls that she knit over ten years for the children of the village of Asembo in Kenya. Her commitment to others continued with volunteering at Queensway Carleton Hospital. Elaine Spratt lived a full life with a big family and close friendships especially at the Unitarian House in Ottawa, her home for the last 10 years. In true giving fashion Elaine donated her body in support of medical education and research. Her family will remember her as a remarkably brave woman who was always ready for a new adventure. She lived a long and exemplary life and exited the world on her own terms. Bravo Mom! You have filled our hearts with love and memories that live on. We raise a glass to you, single malt of course, your favourite. Special thanks to Morgan Mulligan and Bayshore Home Care for their compassionate care. A celebration of Elaine's life will be held in the summer of 2024.

To the Family,
You have our sincere condolences on the loss of your Mom, mother-in-law, GG. It feels like the end of an era and we all thank her for complimenting our lives & our summers at the Landing. So many memories of the 4 "ladies"- childhood friends. Joanie, Evelyn (although we called her Auntie Tootsie), Auntie Bev & Auntie Elaine. So many laughs when they got together and then the run on Twins. Who would have thought 3 sets of them! We were told to never breathe the air at the cottage & then they would laugh!
Thank Elaine for sharing chats with us, your time, your beautiful family and your strength. Rest in peace. Love Dianne & Phil and Family.

Dear Spratt Family,

Mama Spratt exuded goodness. Although my visits with her were far too few and far between, I cherish the memory of each one. I will carry her wit and wisdom with me forever.

Wonderful note about your mom! To all of Mrs. Spratt´s/Elaine´s children and families, sincere condolences to you at this time. It is very easy to call up memories of Elaine installed on a beach chair over the years with a whole assortment of Landing characters entertained by her animated engagement and wit. She often sat with my auntie Joan in particular. Always welcoming at a chance encounter, your mom was a wonderful lady we will all miss.

She introduced the music of Diane Krall to Dave and I and we have enjoyed her ever since. She will be missed by all her family and neighbours in the Landing. She led a great life and touched many people throughout the world.

So very sorry for your loss of a truly Beautiful soul!
Mrs Spratt was loved by many, and I know she will be dearly missed by her family, and friends. Her sparkling blue eyes and that Beautiful smile lit up a room, and was always followed by a welcoming, loving hug as you grew closer to her. You couldn't help but love her.
Enjoy your adventures with Jenn again Mrs Spratt, it disappoints me that I won't hear of them, as they always brought hearty laughter from Jenn and I, as Jenn relived them through her storytelling.
Sending lots of love, and great big hugs to her amazing family.

Our heartfelt condolences to Elaine´s family. As neighbors of Elaine´s at Maclaren´s Landing, we spent many moments together listening to her stories of The Landing, enjoyed many Costco bbq hotdog lunches that she enjoyed immensely, sharing a cocktail and watching beautiful Ottawa River sunsets. We will miss your sparkling baby blues and your company during veggie garden planting. You will forever be in our hearts. xx Mark and Heather

Rick, Chris, Nancy and Jill
To you and your families, I am so sorry for your loss. Elaine was always such an amazing woman. Hearing of her passing brought back so many memories. Visions of her bright yellow "bug" and so many trips into Carlingwood with Jenn to shop for the day while Elaine worked.
