Barry HAYWOOD Obituary

Barry Kenneth Haywood, known as B.K.H. to friends and family, died of heart failure at Southlake Regional Health Centre on November 20, 2024. The son of Kenneth and Muriel Haywood, Barry was born on Pearl Harbour Day, December 7, 1941. He grew up in Forest Hill with his beloved sister, the late Beverly Cakir and was uncle to Derek, Andrew, and Wendy. Barry attended Upper Canada College where he made lifelong friendships. Following high school and the early death of his father, Barry went straight to work at Dominion Securities, where he learned the business from the mail room up, ultimately becoming a successful stockbroker and running his own firms of McEwen Securities and Yorkton Securities. In his later career he was an original partner at Cumberland Asset Management. In business and in life, B.K.H. was known for his tenaciousness, mischievous humour, irrepressible energy, and his eternal pursuit of a good deal. If you were on his list of callers, you knew he wouldn't stop until he reached you. Barry was married and divorced from the novelist, Susan Swan. He was a devoted father to their daughter, Samantha Jane Haywood. For close to 50 years, Barry was a loving partner to Doreen Rapport. B.K.H. spent a lifetime of happy summers in Georgian Bay where he loved to fish for bass, take steam baths, and cook delicious meals for his friends and family, especially his beloved grandchildren, Jane and Thomas Haywood, and his son-in-law Pieter Swinkels. Barry dressed in bespoke suits, sports jackets and bow ties. A true iconoclast and social butterfly, back in the 70s and 80s, B.K.H. hosted an annual event for the wives of his best friends, affectionally referred to as his "ladies lunch". Barry was an avid fly fisher and member of the Caledon Mountain Trout Club. He loved art, movies, antiques, Bordeaux wines, incredibly stinky cheese, and chatting with friends on the phone. He served on the boards of Sotheby's Canada, and the Toronto International Film Festival, and was an active member and former chair of the Wine Committee at The National Club, where he was a member for 57 years. A celebration of life will be planned in early 2025, at his spot, The National Club. Donations to the Georgian Bay Land Trust are welcome.

Loved teasing him about his Georgian bay lilies and managed to completely deceive him as to the number on my property had germinated from his seeds The pictures forwarded to him belonged to a landscape gardener.
He was not pleased. About being taken in for a number of years before I finally told him that the pictures forwarded yearly were the same one my ears were ringing as he slammed down the phone

Worked with Barry years ago on the Rob Parker MP "project". Barry was a great fellow and generous host. Sad news indeed.

Barry´s presence always lit up a room, with beautiful Doreen by his side.
A wonderful character who we had the pleasure of knowing.
