Dr. Barry Shandling, MB, ChB, University of Cape Town (1950), FRCS (Eng), FRCS (C), FACS, Emeritus Professor of Surgery, University of Toronto. Appointed Staff Surgeon at The Hospital for Sick Children (1963). Director Bowel Clinic, Hugh McMillan Medical Centre. Passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2016.
  Born in Worcester, South Africa on
February 20, 1928. Married Mary Elizabeth Gordon RN in 1959. Immigrated to Canada in 1961. Dr. Shandling was an inspiring and innovative teacher with a great sense of humour. He initiated the founding of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Surgeons in 1967, as a personal Canadian Centennial project. His interests included fly-fishing, sailing, camping, music, English literature, history and politics.
  He leaves Mary, his wife of 57 years; three children and six grandchildren; Susan (Byron); Graham and Emma Bignell; Ian (Clare); Alexander and Christopher; Alexandra (Richard); Elizabeth and Felix Gratton.
  Private cremation. If desired, memorial donations to SickKids Hospital Foundation, 555 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M5G 1E2 would be appreciated. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through
