Clareen and I are deeply saddened by the passing away of our long time friend Hon. Justice Barry L. Strayer. We have known Justice Barry since our days in Saskatoon when I had just joined the Law Faculty and he was leaving for Ottawa, and for three months we occupied his house before getting ours. We renewed our friendship from the time we came to Ottawa to join the Justice Department in 1973, and subsequently he kindly agreed to become the President of the NGO that I had founded, the Canada-Commonwealth Human Ecology Council, attending many of the breakfast meetings on Sparks Street and also in my home in Gloucester. He was very supportive of the Himalayan Ecology Study Program that I, on behalf of Canada-CHEC organized in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2001 More than that he was a kind person who was ready to help me and counsel me especially when I was finalizing my doctoral thesis eleven years ago. May God grant Barry Eternal Peace.
Our heartfelt condolences to Barry's wife Elenaor, his daughter Allison and sons Jonathan and Colin, and brother Richard. We have met them all except Richard, and spoken to Eleanor and Allison recently when Barry was ailing, and I still remember his last few words when I telephoned him at Thanksgiving two months ago. May God Bless them and keep them strong.
