BARRY WELLMAN Obituary
With sweet sadness, Barry Wellman, passed away after a long illness at the Jewish Home for the aged, at Baycrest. A lively and colourful man with a sense of humour, he loved connecting people to one another and building community. As an urban sociologist, he pioneered the study of social networks, and in 1977, founded the International Network for Social Network Analysis. He loved to collaborate and mentor, co-authoring with nearly 100 different scholars, ranging from professors to high school students, and doing research with 100s more. In 2007, he was appointed to the Royal Society of Canada, and received many career achievement awards both in Canada and the United States. Together with his soul-mate Bev, they enjoyed exploring new cities on foot, travelling far and wide on invitation and with purpose. Music, art, theatre, climbing mountains and forming relationships with newfound friends from all over the world enhanced their lives in poetic ways. Special thanks to his team of doctors, Dr. David Tang-Wai, Dr. Melvin Silverman, and Dr. Nada Malek, his family doctor at the Baycrest Jewish Home for the aged. In gratitude and appreciation, we thank Ankita, Saba, Juliet, Piriya, Sadie, Arthur, Joseley, and the rest of the wonderful caring staff at the Apotex Centre who looked after him with great care, kindness and understanding. Barry leaves behind his niece Sabrina who he loved, adored, and respected deeply. Although small in family numbers, it was big in love to include sister-in-law, Judy; brother-in-law, Tony; cousins, Larry and Jennifer; and their children, Lloyd and Edie; and their children, Alyse, and Carlie.
