Belle Sheila BLACK

BELLE SHEILA BLACK née Trefler Surrounded by the love of her family, our beloved Belle Black, gracefully and peacefully, left us on Sunday, February 6, 2022. Belle was a beautiful, kind, energetic and talented woman who set a high standard in everything she did, especially as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was the daughter of the late Isadore and Faye Trefler, and predeceased by her younger brother, Jerry Trefler and her late husband, Isadore Black. Belle was the beloved mother of Shelley (Charles Hodgkinson), Philip (Candy Schaffel), Martin (Ellie) and was tragically predeceased by her youngest son, David (Kim). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, Andréa, Ashley (Daniel), Lee (Tara), Eve, Shira, Arly, Estee, Talia (Ethan) and Alyssa and was exceedingly proud of her great- grandchildren, Jake and Ally. Belle was married to Isadore for 50 years and relocated from Toronto, where she was born, to a full life in Peterborough, Ontario. A partner to Isadore in the family business, Blacks of Peterborough, they raised their four children there, ran the clothing business and were actively involved in the Peterborough community. Belle was well known for her hospitality and for founding the fundraiser Chocolate Sunday with her friends, which ran successfully benefitting the local Hadassah Chapter for many years. Belle and Isadore loved travelling the world both on buying trips and personally with their family. Belle hosted many of the holidays and with Isadore and their brothers, sister and sisters-in-law created a strong family tradition of being together. Belle was happiest being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her sisters-in-law, Natalie Consky and Beverley Black, were her closest friends. After Isadore passed away 18 years ago, Belle moved to Toronto where she was able to be with family and friends and she had a lively social life, including two or three mahjong games a week and volunteering at Mount Sinai Hospital. Memorial donations may be made to the Izzy and Faye Trefler fund at Baycrest or to the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. A private service and shiva are being held.
