Bernard LANGER Obituary

BERNARD LANGER It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father, Dr. Bernie Langer, on February 23, 2022, at 89 years of age. Son of the late Pearl and Joe Langer. Predeceased by his siblings Moe and Rose, Jean and Frank, Harvey and Anna, Gordon and Shirley, and Michael and Pearl. Cherished brother-in-law of Liz, Mark and Cindy. Beloved husband to Ryna for 68 years. Loving father and father-in-law to Jacob and Ferne, David and Theresa, Pearl and Bing Siang, and Michael and Corinna. Cherished Zaida to Jessica, Benjamin and Lizzie, Alexander and Marika, Joseph and Kirsten, Sarah, Rachel, Rose, Ailsa, Sam, Lucas, and Jonas. Treasured great grandfather to Miranda, Nathaniel and Norah. Bernie was a gifted surgeon whose clinical skills changed many lives over his long career. As Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto he was a strong leader who developed new and innovative ways to support research in academic practice. He trained hundreds of young surgeons, many of whom have themselves become surgical leaders in Canada, the United States, and internationally. He did the first liver transplant in Toronto and developed what is now one of the most highly respected and prestigious hepatobiliary programs in the world. After retiring from clinical practice, he served as the President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Among the many honours he has received to recognize his accomplishments are the Order of Canada in 2002 and induction into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2015. Bernie was an accomplished fly fisherman who loved to be on the river with his closest friends and family. In his retirement he created detailed, beautiful stained-glass windows and other works of art, which adorn the homes of those he loved. He always said that of the many accomplishments in his life, the one he was most proud of was his family. Private graveside funeral at Pardes Shalom. Please check Benjamin's Park Memorial website at www.benjamins.ca for additional funeral and shiva information. If you wish to make a donation in Bernie's memory, the family would appreciate your consideration of The Bernard and Ryna Langer Chair at the University of Toronto [email protected] or 416-200-0154.

Dear Ryna and family

We came to know you and Bernie so well when we all worked for and attended events at the Royal College about 40 years ago. As an academic surgeon he was justifiably famous. As a friend, he was wonderful! Our kindest thoughts are with you and your family.

My late father, John Johnson, was a classmate of Bernie along with Bill Matthews and Gerry O´Dwyer. My siblings and I heard many stories of the great times the gentlemen shared together. My mother, Barbara sends her respects to Ryna.

Dear family of Dr. Langer,

My young son is a recent liver transplant patient at UHN Toronto, a complex surgery not possible without Dr. Langer's pioneering work. There are no words sufficient to thank him and all those he trained in this truly life-saving surgical practice. May his memory be a blessing.

Ryna: it has been many years since we´ve seen each other. But I came across Bernie from time to time when I worked on health policy; he was a very substantial figure in his field and made important contributions to the public well being as well as to the lives of his patients and their families. What I remember most vividly about him, however, is that he was a great basketball player in high school. I know it sounds trivial - but his brains and physicality and determination on the floor in his high school years even then foreshadowed an important life in his chosen field and we all benefitted from his work. My condolences. His is a major loss.

We offer our condolences to Ryna, Jacob and Ferne and the entire family. Paul remembers him as a remarkable teacher and colleague and I remember how kind and generous he was.
I was in medical school with Jacob and Paul and I were friends with Jacob and Ferne.
We had a surprise meet up with Ryna and Bernie in NYC a few years ago when we were all attending the same concert.
What a great legacy he left in surgery and in his wonderful family. He will be missed.

Bernie was a great role model in the world of academic surgery. He was a wonderful companion on the river, contributing significantly to our week's fishing, catching more than any of us. We look at the stained glass window he did for us every day.
