BERNARD WOLF Obituary

1942-2026 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard Martin Wolf on January 24, 2026. Born in New York City in 1942 to German Jewish immigrant parents, Bernie grew up in Queens Village above his father's butcher shop and was educated at Queens College and Yale University, where he earned his PhD in Economics. He moved to Toronto to accept a Professorship at the Schulich School of Business at York University, where he spent more than 50 years beloved by students and faculty alike. In addition to business and finance, he was passionate about travel and family history, making it appropriate that his last trip abroad was to honour his late parents at their ancestral home. He was a loving and proud father to David and Susan, and a doting grandfather to Max and Eva, who were all able to be with him before his passing. He will be missed by family and friends from all over the world. Donations may be made to the Schulich School of Business in support of the Bernard M. Wolf Prize. Following a private service, the family will welcome Shiva visits in the gathering room at 10 Tichester Road on Thursday, January 29th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Sunday, February 1st, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Bernie was a friend of over 5 decades. I was grateful for all of the sound advice he gave me over the years, as well as for the intellectual stimulation that came from our many discussions about economics and life more generally, He was very caring about me and my family and was a genuinely good person- a Mensch as they say, I will greatly miss him.

I had the privilege of being Bernie“s colleague at the Schulich School of Business, York University. He was an accomplished scholar with exceptional knowledge of economics and was widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the auto industry in Canada. His passing is a tremendous loss to the discipline, to the School, and to the University.
Today, I write to celebrate Bernie the human. Such generosity of spirit, gentleness, and a delightful sense of humor. For these reasons-and so many more-he was immensely popular throughout the School.
I miss him dearly.
I was his successor as Santa Claus at the annual dinner for international students. It was a role he relinquished only with considerable hesitation, and he would actually attend subsequent dinners to point out-always with good humor-how I could improve my "Claus game": the third "ho" was not loud enough, the heels did not click together sharply enough, and so on.
That was so Bernie... always there for the students, for his colleagues, and for the School-wanting nothing but the best for everyone.
Thank you for all you did for us, my friend. Thank you for being such a wonderful, unassuming, kind, and inspiring role model.

I learned the love of economics whilst studying at Glendon College at York university in the early 80s, as a result of professor Wolf. It was not his just knowledge of economics, but it was the way he articulated the issues, and made learning a fun and interesting process.

He left a strong and positive impression on me and many others.

May the family carry many memories of him and may all of them fond ones.

I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Bernard. He had been exercising with me at a community centre and was a joy to work with. I always looked forward to our sessions together.

Bernard had so much love for his family and was incredibly proud of his grandkids, his face would light up every time he spoke of them.

He would often share stories of his life, after our exercise sessions we would sit and chat for a while longer. One of our last conversations was about his heritage, he mentioned a cookbook, " The German-Jewish Cookbook. He reminisced about the food and the history behind the food he grew up with, and sent me the link to the book that evening.

Bernard also loved chocolate and during that same conversation, hinted at chocolate cake.

Well Bernard, I bought the book and am going to make a chocolate cake recipe from it in honor of you.

I will miss you sir.

A Tribute to Bernard Martin Wolf (1942-2026)
From Lalima and Atin
For more than fifty years, Bernard Martin Wolf-our Bernie-was not only our friend but our soulmate in the truest sense of the word. His passing on January 24, 2026 leaves a silence that feels impossibly large, yet it is filled with the echoes of a life lived with intellect, curiosity, humour, and a generosity of spirit that shaped our family as surely as it shaped his own.
We know many students Bernie, who came from every ethnic background Canada offers. We heard first hand their stores on how Bernie guided them gently, coached them firmly and made them great economists and managers.
For us, Bernie was family. Our daughters grew up alongside David and Susan, sharing childhoods, celebrations, and the kind of everyday moments that weave two families together. We watched with joy as a devoted father and later a doting grandfather to Max and Eva, who were blessed to be by his side in his final days. I also loved hi Bronx accen and rapid fire way of talking.
He leaves behind family and friends across continents, each carrying their own version of Bernie: the scholar, the storyteller, the traveller, the mentor, the gentle wit, the loyal friend. For us, he leaves a lifetime of shared laughter, debates, dinners, and the comfort of knowing that some friendships are not chosen-they are destined.
Bernie, you will be deeply missed more than words can hold. But your wisdom, your kindness, and your friendship remain woven into lives , you touched most of all.

Bernard was a long-time patient that I had the pleasure of meeting at the physiotherapy clinic he attended. Seeing him on the schedule always brightened my day. He loved sharing stories of his travels and the joy he felt for his children and grandchildren. On my last shift he left me with wise and inspiring words that I will always carry with me. I feel grateful to have known him, may he rest in peace. My condolences to his family.

I am shocked and saddened by the passing of Dr. Bernie Wolf. He was my professor in the macro-economics part of the Introduction to Economics course, that I took in my third year at York University, Glendon College (1975-1976). He was a truly entertaining and informative Professor, and he will be very much missed by his former students and fellow professors, alike. I offer my sincere condolences to Dr. Wolf's family, in this difficult time.
