Betsy BOYCE Obituary



BOYCE, Betsy Dewar
Of Belleville, passed away at her home on August 12, 2007, in her 95th year. Beloved wife of the late George Edmund Boyce. Loving mother of Mary Boyce of Toronto, Frank (Aloma) Boyce of Belleville and Robert (Gudrun) Boyce of London, UK. Betsy is also survived by her grandchildren, Brynhildur, Steinnun, Jane, Ann, Robert, Ruth and Sarah, and great-grandson Shai. Betsy was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on 27 March 1913, to William Carr (WWI veteran) and Elizabeth Carr. She graduated in constitutional studies from McMaster University in 1933 as the gold medallist, and attended Osgoode Hall Law School until 1935. She was active in the Hastings County Historical Society, serving for many years as picture archivist, as well as the University Women's Club in Toronto and Belleville, Amnesty International and the New Democratic Party. She was the author of The Rebels of Hastings and The Accidental Prime Minister (Mackenzie Bowell), and articles on Louis Riel and other historical subjects. Family and friends will gather for a Memorial Service to celebrate Betsy's life at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 21, 2007, at St. Thomas Anglican Church (corner of Church and Bridge Streets, Belleville), Rev. Peter Joyce officiating. Interment at Belleville Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel. Donations to David Suzuki Foundation or The Stephen Lewis Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
