Brian ANDREW Obituary

Brian Rankin Andrew died peacefully with his family by his side on July 3, 2024, at the age of 73. Creative, adventurous and kind, Brian was an accomplished architect with an unparalleled eye for design. He could draw architectural marvels freehand and artwork that is cherished by his family and friends. He loved to travel, and would often tell stories of his adventures around the world – from a pastis in Paris to hiking in the Himalayas – with his quick wit and loving demeanour. Brian was born in modern-day Zimbabwe in 1951, and often told exciting stories of sunburned adventures with his brother Don and sister Barbara. As a young man, his family emigrated to Toronto. There, Brian discovered his love of architecture and – at a Valentine's Day party – found the love of his life, his beautiful wife Sylvie. Brian and Sylvie were married for 46 years, spending their early marriage in Paris where Brian worked on the famous Opéra Bastille. Returning to Toronto in 1985, they strengthened their bond with the greatest adventure of their lives: the arrival of their sons Ben and Sam. Brian continued to work in Toronto as a partner at WZMH Architects, designing acclaimed buildings around the world including the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Caesars Casino in Windsor and Nations Tower in Abu Dhabi. Despite his love of travel, Brian's favourite place was at home, surrounded by his family. He meticulously designed his own house in Cabbagetown, a showcase of his talent and warmth. He extended that warmth to daughter-in-law Virginia and grandchildren Raphael and Wilder. His kindness, tenderness and joy of life as a father was made even stronger as a grandfather. He has forever touched those who knew him and, through his architecture, others who did not have the privilege. Brian stoically endured two years with terminal brain cancer, but never one to complain, he remained optimistic throughout his journey. A celebration of his life will be held in October. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Brian's memory to the palliative care team at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, who so compassionately cared for him in his final weeks. We love you and miss you, Brian.

Extremely saddened by the untimely passing of my former Partner...a gentleman and a scholar. My deepest condolences to Sylvie Ben and Tom. Not only a supremely talented Architect Brian was a proud loving family man and engaging leader who impressed his delighted clients and won many design competitions. I was privileged to partner with him on both phases of Casino Windsor and the Caesar's re-branding while witnessing his creative work on other complex projects. He was one of a kind.
