Brian VICKERS Obituary
VICKERS, Bryan Charles
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Bryan Charles Vickers, on April 9, 2016 at the age of 82.
He will be truly missed by his wife, Elizabeth, and his children Janet and Bruce and their spouses Pierre and Lina, respectively. Grandfather to four grandchildren, he will always be remembered by Sasha, Evelyne, Christopher and Brayden.
He was predeceased by his sister Valerie (Brandes), and was survived by her daughter, Sarah, and his sister Pam (Lovely) and her daughters, Susan and Jillian.
Bryan was passionate about travelling throughout his life. It was on a trip to Europe when he was twenty-six years old that he met a young lady from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) who would become his travel companion throughout life. Within two weeks of meeting each other they were engaged and six months later they were married. Bryan and Elizabeth recently celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary.
Bryan was a teacher for almost thirty years, most of them at Leaside High School, where he helped inspire and shape the lives of many students. His passion and interest in history was evident to his students and also led him to co-author a book on American history from a Canadian view point.
After his teaching career, Bryan was appointed to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada where he spent four years presiding over several cases.
In retirement Bryan remained active. He continued to travel and led several seniors groups to exotic locations around the world. He also enjoyed golfing, tennis and following sports (especially cheering on the Blue Jays and Leafs).
Family, including his dog 'Shaka', was always most important to Bryan. Being a grandfather especially gave him his greatest joy. He took a keen interest in his grandchildren's lives and was a wonderful support and inspiration to each. He will definitely live on through them.
A simple gathering to celebrate his life will be held on April 14, 2016 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Bruce and Lina's home - 55 Glenridge Drive, Markham ON L6C 1A2.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Heart & Stroke Foundation.
