Brian WHARF Obituary

JUNE 25, 1932 AUGUST 11, 2011 Brian left us peacefully in his bed at home surrounded by his family, just as he wished, following a valiant year-long struggle with declining health. Brian was predeceased by his father Paul, mother Nora, and brother Barrie. Left with heavy hearts are his beloved wife Marilyn, cherished daughters and best friends Joan (Craig) and Sandy (Barry), and his much loved Callahan family: Karen (Tony), Caitlin, and grandchildren Amara, Sylvie, Jude, Aedan, Edie and Keira. Also holding special places in his heart were Patricia, Hilary, Rob, Alison, Ewan and Marylen as well as many lifelong friends and former colleagues and students, too numerous to mention. Brian was born in Regina and spent his early childhood years in Yorkshire, returning to Cordova Bay as a teenager where he attended Mt. View High School. His academic career started at Victoria College, then on to graduate studies at UBC and eventually to Brandeis University in Boston where he earned his Ph.D. in 1969. Brian was a lifelong scholar, academic, teacher and author who inspired many students in the field of social work. His professional achievements are many but he was proudest of establishing the UVic School of Social Work, his lasting contribution to child welfare scholarship and his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development. Following his retirement in 1998, Brian was happiest spending time on Salt Spring Island writing, reading, and hiking the trails with his faithful friend Skye and more recently, Emma. To the Salt Spring neighbours on the lane, especially Cathy and Pat, our special thanks. We will remember Brian for his quiet intellect, his unassuming nature and his many passions that he instilled in us. We miss him terribly already but know he is resting at last. Our sincerest gratitude to the dedicated doctors and nurses at the Royal Jubilee hospital who cared for Brian during the last year of his life, especially the dialysis nurses whose kindness made his visits bearable. Barb Field you are an angel. Please join us in remembering and honouring Brian at the UVic Interfaith Chapel on Wednesday August 31st, 3-4 p.m. Manhattans to be served immediately following at the University Club. In Brian's memory, please consider a donation to the BCSPCA or UNICEF. Gone for a long walk with Skye. BRIAN WHARF
