Bruce HAWKINS Obituary

Bruce C. Hawkins
1931 - 2014

'Brevity is the soul of wit.'
– William Shakespeare
Court is adjourned. After a rich and full life, Bruce died on Tuesday, May 6th. With his very proud sons Benjamin, Matthew, and Daniel, and much cherished daughters-in-law Jane, Megan, and Kate by his side, and the dedicated and caring staff of the Briton House nearby, Bruce made a low key exit, which was always his style. With many creative interests and hobbies, unorthodox for a man of his generation, Bruce taught his sons to be who you are and to do what makes you happy. He loved languages, classical music, dance, textile arts, cycling trips, basketball, and more recently, fetching female CNN news anchors. Behind those sometimes daunting 'steely blue' eyes was an incredible sense of humour and compassion. A man of integrity and opinion, occasionally shooting from the hip, Bruce was measured and fair. Born to be a judge, he presided on the Superior Court of Justice and its predecessors for 29 years - a rare gift to love your job and look forward to it every day. Papa Bru will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Henry, Gill, Dexter, Georgia, and Chloe. And while Bruce never really recovered from the death of his adored wife Susan eight years ago, his loving family knows deep down that their separation is an issue no longer. A celebration of Bruce's life will be held later this month. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Parkinson Society Canada.
