BRUCE SURTEES Obituary

Bruce Venn Surtees passed away peacefully on Saturday December 28th 2024, at Humber River Hospital after a very brief illness. He is pre-deceased by his wife of 52 years, Vivienne Palmer (1932-2006). He is survived by his 2 daughters Adrienne Kathleen and Kathryn Palmer and his 3 grandchildren of whom he was so very proud, Andrew (Jessica), Madeleine and Alexis and his beautiful great granddaughter Lily Surtees. He is also survived by his cousins Jennifer Montgomery and Dale Dobie of Australia. Bruce will be known to many from his retail stores, The Book Cellar, The Classical Record Shop in Hazelton Lanes and Shakespeare Beethoven & Co. in Arizona and Dallas as well as his many years co-hosting Records in Review on CJRT. Bruce contributed for over 20 years to The Wholenote Magazine and enjoyed writing his column "Old Wine in New Bottles". His last column was published in October 2023. Bruce was an audiophile and was widely considered an expert in classical musical and classical recordings. It was his all-consuming love of music that guided his life and led him to open the Classical Record Shop. One of his greatest joys was to advise his customers what recordings were best and what to listen to next. His charming and engaging personality made him unforgettable. He had a wicked sense of humour and was a very good friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) on Tuesday, January 7 from 10 – 11 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

Hi Adrienne! Naomi and I are in San Diego and regretfully cannot attend the funeral. I remember your father as an extraordinary man with a brilliant, caustic wit! He would always greet me with asking "How many people had a saved today!" Once he referred a valued employee to me for counselling. I helped the man ask for a raise! Wonder why I never got any more referrals from your father!! Would very much like to catch up with you once I return to Toronto!

I listened to Bruce all the time. I ordered one of his recommendations and had a great chat with him about my purchase in his shop. Such a lovely fellow. Such a fond memory. God bless him.

(Bach Cantatas with Emma Kirkby which I still have).
