A short list for what shaped the gentle giant we all know as Bryan Casey. Having grown up as an `Irish quadruplet' in World's End and Chelsea (London), UK and Australia, Bryan had a razor-sharp wit dwarfed only by his immense intelligence and a keen, analytical eye. Stolen from us in a tragic car accident in Arnprior, Ontario, Bryan had an uncanny ability to weave together the old world with the new. Ever grateful to his parents for putting four children through university in the 80s, he continued his pursuit of knowledge his value for higher education instilled in his children. His Engineering career took him from Damascus Gate to Dublin, Ghana to New York, Brussels to Brockville and Adelaide to Ottawa. At every stop, he was welcomed by Irish smiles and a telly high in the corner with a live feed of the match of the day, be it rugby, cricket, hurley or football. Whether it was London Irish or Ottawa Irish, his stature ensured he could never get lost. It was only natural he pursued coaching and refereeing to `stay in the game.'Having never seen ice until he arrived in Canada, Bryan adopted a new sport he referred to as 'ice hockey.' Realizing he was unable to move faster on skates than he could on the rugby field, he took up all other things Canadian: alpine and Nordic skiing, sailing, and winter triathlons. We knew he'd never leave when he purchased his first fishing license. Incapable of missing an Ireland rugby game or Chelsea FC match, he followed his teams on a smartphone - whether rinkside or along the sidelines during his children's sporting events. Predeceased by his mother Elizabeth Hickey Casey, Bryan leaves behind his wife LeeEllen Carroll, their three young children Gabriel, Regan and Muiredach Casey, his father William 'Gus' Casey, brothers Anthony and Brendan Casey, and sister Annette Lace. Donations in the name of 'LeeEllen Carroll in trust for the Casey children' can be made at the Bank of Montreal. A wake will be held Friday, April 08, 2011 from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm at Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road, Westboro, Ottawa. Funeral services to follow Saturday, April 09, 2011 at 11am at St. Augustine Parish, 1060 Baseline Road, Ottawa, Ontario. All are welcome.
