DOWNIE, Bryan M., M.B.A., Ph.D., (University of Chicago). Professor of Industrial Relations, Queen's School of Business and former Director, School of Industrial Relations and Industrial Relations Centre, Queen's University
May 8, 1999 in his 61st year. Dr. Downie was one of Canada's foremost scholars and practitioners in the field of industrial relations and dispute resolution. He served three terms as Chairman of both the Education Relations Commission and the College Relations Commission, from 1979 to 1987. He was President of the Canadian Industrial Relations Association, 1984-85, and Canadian Director and Member of the Board of Directors, Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution, 1982-87. Dr. Downie was well known as a mediator, fact finder and interest arbitrator in Ontario public-sector collective bargaining. He was the author of numerous publications, including two books on the evolution of public policy in Ontario educational collective bargaining. A fine teacher, he was the first winner of the Queen's Commerce Society Teaching Excellence Award. Bryan will be best remembered for his integrity, honesty, determination and loyalty. He leaves his wife, Mary (McClellan), son Mark of Wilton, Ontario, and daughter Diana Spry (husband Don) of Ottawa, stepsons Christopher and Duncan Rands of Toronto, sisters Carol Downie and Dona Laycock (husband Harvey), nieces Dawn and Marnie, nephews Glenn and Brent, and great-niece Chelsea of Winnipeg.
