Calvin MCLAUCHLAN Obituary

CALVIN McLAUCHLAN May 6, 1941 - March 10, 2020 Born Paisley, Scotland Died Toronto, Canada Calvin left us in the wee small hours of the morning after listening to Sinatra and Chet Baker. He left peacefully in his sleep. From his early days as president of the Young Men's Ad and Sales Club, copywriter and then account executive for Foster Advertising, to the dynamic partnership that was McLauchlan Moore Massey Agency, Cal was a force to be reckoned with in the ad business. He spent the latter part of his career running the McLauchlan Group and a great deal of that time jetting around the world to exotic and interesting places on behalf of his business. Widely read, he was both an extremely interesting and interested man. Calvin had one of the most outsized and generous hearts a person could have, as witnessed by the many people he quietly helped and the loyal and loving friends who mourn his passing. He profoundly influenced many lives and it's hard to imagine a world without him. Predeceased by his mother and father, William and Margaret McLauchlan, his brother, Ian McLauchlan and sister, Rosemary Hunter (McLauchlan), Calvin is survived and very much missed by his sister, Alexandra, his brothers, William, and Murray and wife, Denise Donlon, his nephew, Colin Hunter and wife, Emily, his niece, Ann Bettonvil (Hunter) and husband, Andy and their children, Avery and Braydon. A special thank you to Michele Williams who made Calvin's life a joy in his last few years, and to the staff at Revera Leaside and Michael Garron Hospital for their kindness. A private gathering for the immediate family will be held, followed by a cremation. A celebration of life for all his friends and associates will come at a later date to be announced. Donations to the charity of your choice in Calvin's name would be greatly appreciated. He was very generous in that respect himself. Condolences may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com. I did not know Cal well. Over the years, however, we found occasional time to share a coffee and the highlights of our journeys. Looking back, I now realize just how outrageously parallel those journeys were.

We were both born in 1941 then spent our boyhoods and teen aged years in the Lawrence and Dufferin area of Toronto. We were both nurtured by large families, families that worked hard to make ends meet.

Cal and I were both scholastically precocious--until high school at least--with the result that we both completed grade 13 at the age of 16. I shared a number of classes with Cal during those intimidating years: Intimidating because we both came from poor families while half our schoolmates were wealthy and they wore it well.

After high school I joined an advertising agency. By the time I was 26 I started my own. And Cal did the same just a couple of years later. And we both chose exceptional business partners.

Even more outrageously, we both dated the late, great, Rosanne McWaters.

Rosanne revered her times with Cal. She would tell me about him, the warmth of his large family, how music prevailed at every gathering and how amazingly talented Murray was, even in his early teen years.

I did not know Cal well but what I did know was that he was extraordinarily talented, modest and a very kind man. I so wish I had known him better.

My profound condolences, McLaughlin family, on
your loss. But take some comfort in remembering all you contributed to molding the life of this fine, fine man.

I had the pleasure of meeting Cal on several occasions. He did some work for our company during the magazine wonder years.

I still remember:

"Chatelaine and Reader's Digest decisively defeat Homemaker's in the battle for rural circulation."

Understated and funny just like the man who wrote the words.

My condolences to his family.
