Carole SMITH Obituary

Carole Anne Margaret Smith, born in St. Catharines, Ont., 54, passed away in Ottawa, June 7, 2024. Beloved wife of Bill Young, devoted daughter of Noreen Smith, sister and best friend to Joyce and Helen (Adrian). Adored Auntie Carolee to Angus, Kate and Freya. Predeceased by father Brian Smith. She is also survived by family in Ireland and England. Focusing on Environmental Science, she was a graduate of Beamsville District Secondary School and the University of Toronto as well as the University of Edinburgh, where she received a master's degree while a Rotary International Ambassadorial Fellow. "Service above self" was a guiding principle in Carole's life. Immediately on graduating with her B.Sc., she held several positions with the federal government, beginning with Public Works in Toronto and followed by Indian and Northern Affairs in Thunder Bay. In Ottawa, she worked for the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, Public Safety, and the International Joint Commission. She had just returned to Public Safety before becoming ill. Always eager to create positive, tangible change in the world, she pursued every project with her trademark dedication and attention to detail. Carole's love of aviation and adventure was evident from a very young age. She trained at the Brampton Flying Club, where she graduated as the top female private pilot of 1996. This love, combined with her characteristic care for others, led to a long history with the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association. In 1999, while with the Northwestern Ontario Air Search & Rescue Association in Thunder Bay, Carole was part of a team given an OPP Commissioner's Citation for Lifesaving after rescuing a pilot from a crash site. She spent many hours working and training with ground and air search and rescue groups in Thunder Bay and at Rockcliffe in Ottawa, including as a director and safety officer. Carole was generous to a fault, possessing the quickest of wits and kindest of souls. She loved music, literature, and travel, with a keen eye for natural beauty that often resulted in stunning photographs. A multi-talented artist and pianist, Carole shared her beautiful voice in choirs for many years. A constant reader and '80s TV series aficionado, she always enjoyed exchanging ideas, whether around the campfire, the boardroom table, or during Trivia Night. There was nothing Carole wouldn't do for her family or her friends. She was happiest camping, paddling her cherished canoe, walking through the woods or flying a plane with her loved ones. Fighting aggressive leukemia in the last eight months took her away from the outdoors, but memories of many trips across Canada and the world helped to sustain her. Carole and her family were deeply grateful for the excellent care she received at Ottawa General and St. Vincent's hospitals and from the palliative care team. A celebration of life will be held in the future, but in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ottawa General Hospital or an environmental Charity of Your Choice.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to Carole's mother, Noreen, her sisters Joyce and Helen, her husband, Bill and her nephew and nieces. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and I regret that I am communicating so late. I knew Carole mainly through her Auntie, Dr. M. Carmel McEnroy when we lived together as graduate students in Toronto. Carmel kept us up to date on her many relatives from Ireland, but we were able to know Joyce, Carole and Helen (and their parents, Brian and Noreen) since they visited when they lived in St. Catherine's. We were especially amazed to hear that Carole had become a pilot and were so impressed by her many accomplishments. It is consoling to hear that she was able to do what she wanted in life. My heart goes out to Noreen and "the girls" (as we used to call them). May you find comfort in the memories of your wife, daughter and sister. She was a real gift to so many in her short life.

For those who volunteer, know that occasionally you get the honour and great privilege to work with people of greatness. To post their passing before their time, comes with great sadness. Carol Smith was one of those people. Anyone who worked around her was infected with her dedication. She will be missed by all our SAR Community. Sincerest Condolences to her family!

I was fortunate to know Carole when her job brought her to Thunder Bay. She brought her talents and knowledge to the Northwestern Ontario Search and Rescue Association where I was on the board of directors. Her enthusiasm was contagious and she worked tirelessly for the organization. All of this was evident in the way she led the search team on the search that resulted in their OPP citation. We were all disappointed when her career took her from our city. On a personal level, I found Carole to be perceptive, well spoken and well educated. She was always a pleasure to be with, with a personality for all occasions. My condolences go out to her husband, family and friends. Such a loss is hard to accept and for me, touched very close to home as my son has been diagnosed with CML this year. But I would rather suffer the sorrow of her loss than to have never had the chance to know her. It takes but a minute to say hello, but forever to say goodbye. Rest peacefully Carole.

My deepest condolences to Carole's family, friends and co-workers. Carole and I worked on several projects, such as SARscene 2007, during her tenure with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat. Her calm demure often lead to consensus amongst many different agencies. Rest in Peace Carole.

Our family will greatly miss Carole´s quiet brilliance and gentle kindness. Just being in her presence was a gift ... she knew how to make people feel special. An emptiness has been created with Carole´s loss. We are so sorry to Bill and to Carole´s family.

Carole Smith was an incredible advocate of search and rescue and during her time with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, was committed to developing a strong foundation for the delivery of search and rescue services in Canada. She was a dedicated SAR volunteer with CASARA and her passing is a loss not only for her family and community, but for the rest of Canada. May her spirit live on through those she has impacted with her brilliance.
