Carolyn JACKSON Obituary

CAROLYN JACKSON (née Cole) 1943 - 2022 With deep regret her family announces the passing of Carolyn Phyllis Jackson on January 5, 2022. Carolyn was a force in the publishing industry, beginning her career at age twelve, writing children's book reviews for the Toronto Telegram. After graduating from Ryerson's School of Journalism, she worked first at the Toronto Telegram and then as an assistant travel editor at the Toronto Sun. She served as president of the Canadian Chapter of the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) while editor of Air Canada's enRoute Magazine, and later moved to Montreal to be the managing editor at non-fiction book publisher St. Remy Press. Her last position before retirement was managing editor at feminist publisher, Second Story Press. A loyal friend, Carolyn mentored countless authors and regaled friends and colleagues with wit, humour, and wisdom. She was an adventurer, author and stellar raconteur with an insuppressible zest for life, which served her well as she bore the ravages of Parkinson's and Ehlers-Danlos with grace.

She leaves behind her son, Christopher Jackson (Julie Huguet); granddaughter, Maxine Russi; sister, Kathryn Cole; brother, Jason Cole; nieces, Lienne (Igor Rakovic) and Miguela Cole; grandnephew, Hugh Cole; and grandniece, Alexis Rakovic.

A private, eco-friendly burial will take place in the spring in Prince Edward County where she was born, and a celebration of a life fully lived will follow later in the year. Special thanks to her PSWs Almaz, Indira, and Mary Grace for their loving care, as well as the exemplary staff at North York General Hospital's Critical Care and Emergency units for their professionalism and kindness. Condolences at www.ecofuneral.ca. Donations in her memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation or Operation Smile Canada.

Dear Carolyn will never be forgotten. I have wonderful memories of travelling together and adventure after adventure in the BVI, across Canada, Portugal, Madeira, Bermuda, Thailand, Poland, Hungary and more. I will never forget her voice and laughing uproariously. Life was always better when Carolyn was in the room, on the tour or walking arm and arm beside you. My heart goes out to Carolyn's family and countless friends. We all share a special bond.

Carolyn was my friend throughout my teenage years and thereafter. She quietly supported me through tough times, me fighting with teachers, defending the underdog, getting thrown out of classes, told I would never get far. She was always waiting for me to walk home from or head back to school. One phrase of hers kept me going . "You will never know what you can do, if you don't try." She graduated in journalism from Ryerson. I taught there as a philosophy professor for 28 years. Those years were not easy for females. She never quit trying and succeeding, and I fought on as well. She was my inspiration.

Someone recently commented that Carolyn was "kind and fun"; that's a wonderfully accurate description, but she was also a lover of good writing, which matters so much. I will miss her friendship in many ways. . .
