Catherine CROSBIE Obituary

Patty passed away unexpectedly yet peacefully at home, two months shy of her 80th birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Catherine James; and siblings, Art and Mary Elizabeth. John S. Crosbie was the man who captured Patty's heart and sadly left this world after 23 years of marriage. Patty leaves behind her daughter, Kate (Ismail); granddaughters, Mariana and Seren; her son, Charles (Carla); granddaughters, Charlotte and Cecily. She will be deeply missed by her stepsons, Peter, Stephen, Andrew, and their children. Patty's remaining siblings Margaret Anne Cutler and Peter James, as well as countless friends will miss her terribly. Patty grew up in Toronto, attending Whitney Public School and North Toronto Collegiate Institute, with summers happily spent at Camp Shawanaga and Camp Calumet. After her wild adventures travelling throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa in a VW van, she settled back in Toronto. For 18 years, she worked as founding executive director of the National Advertising Benevolent Society (NABS), a role she cherished for her ability to help those less fortunate in their time of need. When she moved to Port Hope, Patty continued her philanthropic work as a volunteer at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Port Hope Jazz Festival, Port Hope House Tours, Federal Liberal Party and served three years as President of La Jeunesse Youth Orchestra. Patty was an avid lover of tennis, film, fiction, political debate, and trivia. Enjoying time with family and friends in Muskoka and Pointe-au-Baril was always a summer highlight. A loving, caring and generous woman, Patty never failed to send a birthday card or recognize another's accomplishment. Her passing leaves a big hole in our lives and she will be deeply missed. Service to be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge St;, Toronto, ON, Friday, June 28th, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the Friendship Room. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund (www.thestar.com/faf) or Doctors Without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.ca/).

I am so very sorry to learn of this very sad news. Patty and I became friends when she was Executive Director at NABS and I started as General Manager for Western Canada in 1992 and we became and remained good friends ever since. That's over 32 years. I will miss Patty very much.

Patty and I were friends from the moment we met twenty years ago. We went through some tough times together. Always together. If the phone rang during Jeopardy I would know who it was. Cannot imagine my world without her.

Patty was a delightful customer of ours. She would always make her visit personal with a conversation about where the chelsea loafs were going or what family she was about to connect with. I grew fond of Patty and enjoyed these glimpses into her life. I am sorry to learn those visits will not be happening anymore. I wish Patty's family well as they adjust to this significant loss. I am glad I knew her!

Heartbroken for the family to hear this sad news... Patty was such a force and was always involved in everything in her community - an inspiration. She was an integral friend to both my mother and my uncle for which our family was so grateful ... she always up for a get together and a party and always had news from far and wide - she will be missed - my thoughts and prayers go to her wonderful family of whom she was so very proud.

I am shocked to read of Patty's passing. She was a vibrant, thoughtful, empathetic friend. Patty was a valued board member of The New Haven Learning Centre. She worked tirelessly on Fundraising events and had many pearls of wisdom for a fledgling organization. I will never forget her love and dedication. May she rest in peace and my deepest sympathies to the family.

The other woman in my life, Patty Crosbie, is gone. Literally, from the beginning of NABS she was a wonderful friend to my late wife, Phyllis and myself. I will miss her terribly. She made me laugh.
