CATHERINE HENDERSON Obituary

Peacefully, after a short illness at the St. Catharines Hospital on Friday, April 19, 2024, in her 82nd year. Beloved wife of 52 years of John Henderson; loving mother of Andrew Henderson (Mary Huff) and Jane Dunn (Joseph). Her greatest role was as doting grandmother to Elliot and John Christian Henderson, and Thomas, Patrick and William Dunn. Also survived by her brother, Gerald Hanzel (Phyl); sister-in-law, Heather Henderson; and nieces and nephews, Kristin Henderson, Carol Book, Bonnie Giampa, Kirk Henderson, Debbie Daniels, and Steven Hanzel. Predeceased by her parents, Leon and Pearl Catherine (Ebert) Hanzel; daughter, Janet Catherine (1974); and brothers-in-law, Donald and Gordon Henderson. A native of Port Colborne, she graduated from the Port Colborne High School and completed her training as a Registered Nursing Assistant at the Welland County General Hospital in 1966, working for Port Colborne Medical Associates and MDS Laboratories. Cathy was actively involved in the management and operation of Henderson's Pharmacy. Her dedication to her family and community was evident in all facets of her life. For over forty years, she coordinated the Thorold Arts and Crafts Show and arts and crafts shows benefiting the Thorold Community Activities Group, Niagara Falls Rotary Club, and Thorold Secondary School. She served on the boards of the Thorold Public Library and the Thorold and Beaverdams Historical Society, and she was actively involved in the Friends of the Beaverdams Church. Cathy was a lifelong supporter of the arts, singing in the Port Colborne Operatic Society and the Robert Wood Singers, and serving as manager of the Niagara Children's Chorus. She was especially proud of the musical and sporting endeavors of her family, and her greatest joy was attending their choral and band concerts, organ recitals, and hockey games. In faith, she was a member of St. Thomas' Anglican Church, St. Catharines. A private family service of interment was held at Lakeview Cemetery, Thorold. A service of thanksgiving for her life will be held on Saturday, June 1st at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas' Anglican Church, 99 Ontario Street, St. Catharines. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the ICU at the St. Catharines Hospital. As expressions of sympathy, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Niagara Peninsula Children's Centre, SickKids, or the Friends of the Beaverdams Church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Haine Funeral Home & Chapel, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold.
