Catherine MINGIE Obituary

CATHERINE MARY MINGIE (née Bell) On January 8, 2023, in Toronto at home our mother, Mary Mingie, died. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Peter George Mingie, loving mother of Margaret Millward and her husband, James; son, Thomas Bell Scott and his wife, Karen of Sacramento, CA.; two fine grandsons, Scott and Jeffrey Millward; and sister, the late Margaret Ballantyne of London, ON. Mary was born in Windsor, ON in 1934 to Charles Adams Bell and Dorothy Cecelia Bell (Dunn). She attended school in Windsor until she left for the University of Toronto where she graduated in Arts in 1956, having spent her third year at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Our mother had many loves in her life, her family, the cottage at Killarney where her family summered on the north shore of Georgian Bay since the 1890s. She loved the picnics, the rocks and the cool, blue water of Georgian Bay. She took great enjoyment of her dogs and bird watching. She also took great pleasure in a variety of interesting travels. Among them were India, Singapore and an all-time favorite New York City Mother's interests were many - The National Ballet of Canada, a founding member of Prologue to the Performing Arts, The Garden Club of Toronto, The Current Events Club of Toronto and Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts, for all of whom she spent interesting and challenging volunteer hours. Mother was also a great tennis, bridge and skiing enthusiast. At our mother's request there will be no funeral. Margaret and Tom will be welcoming friends and family to a reception at the Badminton and Racquet Club of Toronto, 25 St. Clair Avenue West on January 13th between 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Parking available after 5:00 p.m.

So sorry to hear of Auntie Mary's passing. She will always hold a special place in my heart. Not only was she an amazing friend to my mother, Nancy Sweet (nee Mothersill) but I also thoroughly enjoyed her lust for life, and her wonderful letters.
Please accept my sincerest condolences.

So sorry to have missed the death notice and the January 13 reception by Margaret and Tom of friends and family. For many years, Mary was my only surviving first cousin. We were strongly bonded and as a small child she knew my father, Major Thomas E. Hayhurst, of the Essex Scottish Regiment, who sailed on my birth date for England, and was lost on the beaches of Dieppe in August 1942. Mary recently shared with me her memories of the day her family and my mother received the news of my father´s death.

To Mary´s children, Tom and Margaret, and grandchildren, Scott and Jeffrey, Anne and I express our sincere sympathy and condolences. We want them to know that we care for them and do not want to lose touch.

My thoughts and love to Margaret and Tom and their families as they honour Mary's life. It is a privilege to have been her friend and colleague for many years, a liaison rooted in our mutual enthusiasm for the performing arts.

I want to recognize Mary's contribution to The Volunteer Committee, The National Ballet of Canada. She served as President from 1978-1980, and served on many committees and projects. I didn't know her personally, but I have heard that she was a lovely lady.
Please accept our Committee's thanks, and sorrow at her death.

I am a member of the B&R and saw this notice. While I didn't know your mother, I was interested to see she did her Junior Year at Smith College - which is also my alma mater (albeit a generation later). I wish we would have had the chance to talk about our shared memories. My condolences to the Mingie family.
