Awake in the small hours, I reminisce a lot. Tonight my thoughts were filled with memories of my family home and our neighbours. Cecil came into my mind. I decided to see if I could trace him on the internet. His family lived next door to us but Cecil had left home by the time we moved in and it was about 5 years before we met him. And what a joy he was to know. There would be an excitement on the road as if a celebrity was visiting, everyone wanted to talk to him and you could hear his laughter ring out. The chats my family had with him over the garden hedge, and the sound of him singing in the bathroom in the morning stand out. In the late seventies I went on a tour in the U.S.A. and into Toronto. I was alone on the tour but didn't feel strange as I had gone on tours to Geneva and Paris with the same organisers. Mr. Moody had asked me to telephone Cecil when I arrived in Toronto and I was happy to do so. I received a wonderful welcome over the telephone and Cecil immediately invited me to his home. I had met Leslie when she was in Dublin. I had a lovely evening with them and the next day Cecil arranged to meet me to show me around Toronto. I had a marvellous time, what an informative and entertaining guide he was. Sadly, there is no one left of my family for me to tell of Cecil's passing but maybe they have met up in the next life. My deepest condolences to Leslie and their sons. I'm sure knowing how well loved Cecil was by everyone who met him will be of comfort to her. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.

Our family was very saddened to learn recently of Cecil's death last August. After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan, Cec lived with our family while teaching at the Fort Frances High School in Northwestern Ontario. He became a much loved part of the McFarlane family and had a big influence on each of us - Paul as a teenager, Jill and Judy as children, and our parents, Helen and Lloyd as a dear friend.
As we grew older, Cecil was there for us as a source of advice and support. He was an example of the success and characteristics our parents were trying to instill in us. As a Deacon in the Anglican Church, Cec worked closely with our father, who was the Rector at St. John's, Fort Frances. Parishioners were inspired by his message and grateful for the compassionate care he bestowed upon them in their time of need.
Cecil embraced life. His thirst for knowledge, sense of adventure, athletic skills, dedication to teamwork, ability to inspire and motivate, his joy of singing and playing the trumpet, his voracity for reading and his wonderful sense of humour were an inspiration to all who knew him. Like a Beatles album in the 1960's each time you played it, it got better.
For Paul, Cecil was a guiding light during his university studies and post graduate zeal for travel, and helped him figure out what he wanted to do with his life. Cecil was gracious in allowing him to board at his house along with his fellow teacher Peter. He introduced Paul to the Toronto Scottish Rugby Club where he, like Ghislaine Landy, benefitted from the fellowship, merits of teamwork, and the thrill of success, and experience the joy of overcoming the myriad of challenges of the game.
We were delighted Cecil was able to join our family celebration for Lloyd's 90th birthday. While we regrettably had little contact in recent years, he is never far from our thoughts. His zeal for life, and his kind and loving nature helped to shape each of us, and we will always keep him in our hearts. Our deepest condolences to Leslie, John and Adam and the rest of the family.
Sincerely,
Paul McFarlane, Jill McNaught and Judy Watling

I met Cecil when I went to my very first Boys Brigade summer camp in Treaddur Bay in the mid-60's. He was our tent captain (I think) and we all adored him. He took me under his wing and made sure I was included in all the activities. After we returned t Dublin, he encouraged me to participate in the BB sports life, and kept in touch for some time after he returned to Canada.
It says a lot about his character that he took that much interest in, and care of one youngster, and I have always admired him. I still think of him whenever "Canadian Sunset" is played, as he often sang it. Rest in Peace, Cecil.

Dear Leslie & Family, what a great loss. Cec was a star in a special galaxy. He always had room in his heart for other people. It was Cecil who inspired me as a 16 year old growing up in Dublin that Canada could be a route to higher education for me. When I did gain acceptance to the Ontario College of Art Cecil would make trips in to Toronto from Fort Francis to support me. Even later in New York when I attended Columbia he brought Lesley & the boys to visit both there & in later years to Vancouver. To me, Cecil will always be like an elder brother to me. God bless you Cecil for all you did for so, so many people.

Lawrence was an outstanding school in the '80s with great teachers in math, english, science and history, including and especially Cec. Nevertheless, the lasting influence in my life at LPCI was my education on the Rugby field. My 2 brothers and I all played. On weekends Cec would dress for the Toronto Scottish 2nds or 3rds and we shared shoulder to shoulder his athletic gift. A generation later roles reversed and I was fortunate to play for our club with Adam and John. Cec Moody's gift of rugby made a profound impact on my life and for that I will always be grateful. My condolences to Adam, John and Leslie. God bless you Mr. Moody.

My condolences to the family of Mr. Moody. I knew him for only a short time as a music volunteer at Bridgepoint, but I looked forward each week to singing with him. He was always most appreciative which made me feel good. Thank you, Mr. Moody.

I played Rugby at Danforth Tech and we were feirce rivals with Lawrence Park. Coach Moody was very admired for his competitive nature, his well coached teams, and the quality of play he always promoted. I cannot remember a single other coach by name I played against, but I remember coach Moody very well. He was much admired in the Rugby community at the club level...but at the high school level he was a legend.

I am honoured to have played on teams alongside Cec Moody. Mind you, I preferred to watch his elegant and incisive half-back play than try to match his high standards and inventive mind on the field. He was a hard taskmaster and expected nothing but the best from his team-mates. He was a classic! He was an inspiration! He opened the eyes and minds of the young and his contemporaries to the way the Game should and could be played. Thank you for the memories, Cec.

A great man, fully committed to what he cared about. A wonderful life, well lived, and countless young athletes who know more about rugby, and life, thanks to Cec.
I'll always remember the laughter and competitive fire Cec lived his life with. He'll be missed, but he'll also always be remembered.

Us New Zealand Martins will miss you a Uncle Cec. Amazing to see how you have positively touched the lives of so many. I have great memories of being in awe as you hoisted us over the fence to sneak into Storyland. Your cheeky disregard for rules has spilled over to my own life. Your spirit lives on in John and Adam, both wonderful men of integrity and spirit. Rest In Peace.

Having played with him and against him (Nomads), he was an outstanding player. Cec also taught my son (Phil Jones) the elements of rugby. He lead Phil to the city championship with many sons of fellow rugby players.
I also coached rugby at Lorne Park (Mississauga) and when I returned home (after coaching), he was still at Lawrence Park coaching his team!
Our condolences to the family

I'm also from Dublin, and love rugby - as does my husband Joe Kopu, like all good Kiwis - so any time either, or both, of us bumped into Cec, we'd settle down for a good chat. And it didn't matter whether that was on the footpath, in Shoppers, in the Duke. As we all know, Cec loved a chat. Joe and he would talk about rugby - our son Garrett went to Northern, so there was always a bit of Northern vs Lawrence Park banter - particularly about the 'good old days'. Cec and I would talk about Dublin and Ireland and have a grand old time slagging the various elements of life in Dublin versus back in the day when "Dublin was Dublin". He'd tell me about his cycling adventures in Ireland which always fascinated me. The whole idea of cycling around Ireland with just a bike and a tarp to keep him dry in case it rained (what were the chances). Cec was a gem and I can't imagine how large the hole he has left in his family's life. "Ar dheis De a raibh a anam" (may he rest in peace)

As a Newbie to Norway Bay some 30 years ago I met Cec at our shared beach ensconced in a chair book in hand. He looked up giving that smile brighter than the sun of the day. Two hours later I realized what it was really like to sit with a scholar. Smiling, twinkling he filled in many of the gapes of knowledge in my own recently acquired MA. In the evening he came to our cottage to meet my husband and my children welcoming us to Norway Bay. We loved his visits and his warmth and stories. To dear Leslie and sons John and Adam May the wind blow at your back and the memories of Cec your husband and Dad keep you peddling through your life journies. Ann Baron

He lived one year in the south of France where I met him and his young family. We'd go for runs together and regularly attented softball games and picnics with other expats living in Aix-en-Provence. Together with our young families, we located obscure ancient ruins of the Greeks and Romans and visited them, as well as the more obvious sites in Nimes, Marseille, Arles and Avignon. Wonderful times with a wonderful guy.

Oh Cec, I loved my chats with you on a Friday night in the Kent - teacher to teacher. The profession didn't tire you; it energized you. You touched the hearts of so many. Lucky them and lucky me. My heart goes out to your family xx

What an inspiration he was as a colleague during my three years at Lawrence Park. He recruited me to play rugby with The Scottish and my love of rugby endures to this day, as does the pain of various bruises and broken bones that remind me of him daily! He was a genuine renaissance man.The world is poorer for his passing.

Rest in peace Cec. I will always remember him as a history teacher during the summer months in Ireland, teaching on my fathers course. He was always riding his bike with such an adventurous spirit. And, my fondest memory was the sound of his laugh and if you ever paid for water - he just could not understand. "Paying for water, when you can get it free from a tap" he would say with a smile so big you could barely see his eyes - followed by a roar of laughter. What a privilege it was to have spent so many summers with Cec. May he find all the bike trails on his next adventure. Tessa Burke

My thoughts and prayers to the family. Mr. Moody was an incredible man. As my teacher and coach, he was second to none. One of those rare individuals that truly made a difference in the lives of the people that knew him. The rugby team in the sky just got a whole lot better.
