Celine HATHERLY Obituary

CELINE MARIE HATHERLY February 22 1927 - July 1 2022 Celine Marie Hatherly (nee Brennan), aged 95 died peacefully on July 1, in Alliston, Ontario, with her daughter Sara at her bedside. Celine was predeceased by her parents; brothers, John and 'Bruz'; and her dearly loved husband of nearly 60 years, John (Jack) Wylie Hatherly. Celine is survived by her 6 children: daughters Mary Elizabeth (Carl) of St. John's, NL, Hope of Edmonton, AB, Jacqueline Gdanski (Chris) of Grimsby, ON and Sara Adams (Kevin) of Alliston, ON; sons Gerald Robert (Toni-Marie) of Hong Kong and John Anthony (Christina) of Scottsdale, AZ. She is also survived by her 8 grandchildren, Justin, Lucius, Christiane, Wylie, Celine, Sean, Sydney and Madison; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Sydney Mines, Celine studied at St. Francis Xavier University and earned her teaching degree at Dalhousie University where she met her husband. After teaching in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia she and Jack lived in Regina, Toronto, and Thunder Bay where he had a flourishing law practice and she was involved in a host of community and volunteer organizations. In 1990, Celine and Jack retired to her much loved Bras d'Or Lakes in Cape Breton. Following Jack's death, Celine moved from Halifax to Alliston, Ontario in 2018 where she enjoyed her final years with Sara and Kevin. Celine was a woman of great charm, deep faith, and empathy and respect for others. She had the gift of making lasting friendships and was loved by many for her unfailing kindness, interest in the world around her, and sense of fun. A wonderful hostess who earned a much-deserved reputation for her culinary skills and parties, she gave generously of her time to many organizations including the IODE, University Women's Club, Church Council and Meals on Wheels and supported many charities including Doctors Without Borders, the Humane Society and Sacred Heart School in Halifax. Passionate about art and music, Celine was a patron of local symphony orchestras in both Thunder Bay and Halifax. A keen duplicate bridge player who earned her stripes as a life master as a young woman, Celine had an enduring interest in history and politics and was a life-long animal lover. Inspired by a love of travel, Celine made trips throughout North America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic), and travelled extensively in Asia (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia). She was fascinated by other cultures and enjoyed "going local" on her travels with Jack. In 1990 she and Jack travelled across China by local train calling it one of their most memorable trips. While Celine will be deeply missed by her family and friends, we all will share the many happy memories she gave us through her innate goodness, intellectual curiosity, child-like sense of seeing the best in all, and genuine wish to please. Rest in peace, our dear mother, grandmother, and loving soul. A very special thank you to the staff of Kingsmere Retirement Living, Bayshore, Matthews House and Dr. Jansen for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Celine. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider making a donation to your favorite charity in Celine's name. To honour Celine's memory, a celebration of life will be held at a later date in Cape Breton.
