Charles BATE Obituary

CHARLES DEREK STEWART BATE Passed away peacefully at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto on January 15, 2020 in his 94th year. Born May 25, 1926, in London, Ontario to Donald and Joan Bate. Survived by sons Derek (Elizabeth), John (Jennifer) and Graeme (Laureen). Beloved grandfather to Caitlin, Alex, Eric, Ashley and Brendan, and brother-in-law to John and Margaret Catto. Predeceased by wife of 62 years Catherine (Cay), twin brother David and older brother Stewart. Derek was an alumnus, teacher and Assistant Headmaster at the University of Toronto Schools (UTS) to which he maintained a lifelong dedication and connection. He was a committed educator who finished his career as Principal at three Peel Region high schools, Bramalea, Lorne Park and North Peel. In his retirement, Derek was the first Executive Director of the UTS Alumni Association, taking on the role during a time of great financial need for the school. Derek graduated with a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto (1948), obtained a Teaching Certificate from the Ontario College of Education (1949), M.Ed. from the University of Toronto (1964) and was an Associate of the University of London (UK) Institute of Education. The Navy and its community played a vital role in Derek's life. He joined the UNTD in 1944 and served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Commander in 1968. His softball pitching skills led the Navy to many thrilling victories over rival militia teams. In addition to his teaching and naval careers, Derek was an avid sportsman, playing golf, badminton and tennis into his late 80s. He learned curling in his retirement and became an accomplished skip. He and his twin brother David were a duplicate bridge team extraordinaire, earning many Masterpoints. Derek loved his time at the family island cottage at Pointe-au-Baril and on the tennis courts of the Ojibway Club. He was a faithful member of the St. Andrew's Society, and Scottish country dancing in Toronto was never the same after Derek was forced to give up his hooting and hollering in his 70s. Derek was a life-long member of the St. Clement's community, serving as Warden, Church School Superintendent and on Toronto Diocese Committees. The family would like to express its appreciation to the 9th floor staff at Briton House for their warm and compassionate care over the final years of Derek's life. Derek will be remembered as a family man of infinite patience, sly humour, unquestioned integrity and quiet leadership. He was a mentor and role model to all who were fortunate enough to be taught by him, teach with him or be on his team. He will be deeply missed by his extended Bate and Catto families. A Service in Celebration of Derek's Life will be held at St. Clement's Anglican Church, 70 St. Clement's Ave., 11:00 a.m. Thursday January 23, 2020. Donations in Derek's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the UTS Building the Future Campaign.

I realize that this is late, but having only just seen the notice. My condolences to the family. Mr Bate, as we knew him, was principal at Lorne Park my last three years there (80-3). I got to know talk to him many times - and remember him fondly. I followed into the Engineering Science (Physics) program. It was nice to see him at and talk to him at the school's 50th reunion in 2007. May he rest In peace.

Mr. Bate was a friend of the family and the reason why I was able to join the UTS family for grade 13 only, having come from Quebec grade 11. My sympathies to the families affected by his death: so sad.

My sincere condolences to the Bate and Catto families. I knew Derek first as a respected principal in the Peel School Board. As a new principal at UTS, I quickly came to realize that Derek had another rich legacy - as a student, teacher, administrator, and active alumnus of UTS. Derek was consistently thoughtful and supportive providing ongoing encouragement. He was keenly interested in all aspects of the Schools and attended many UTS events. He will be missed!

Mr Bate was a wonderful teacher and mentor during my years at UTS. He is regularly remembered at our 6T1 Class Reunions. I was fortunate to be in his classes.

Derek led the alumni association while I was a student at UTS. He was supportive, generous, and encouraging whenever I approached him with my ideas - many of which were crazy. He ended up being a champion of With Pardonable Pride despite it not being an official UTS history, and I am forever grateful for his support. His legacy lives on in the many people he supported.

I expect that this message board will be bursting with tributes by the time it closes. Derek was a model for anyone wishing to live a satisfying and worthwhile life. I first knew him when I was a UTS student in the 60s. Later on we would meet annually at the UTS alumni golf tournament. My fondest memories of him came from the times we spent together on Quest nature tours to Antarctica and the Canadian Arctic. He was a keen birder and a lover of wilderness. What a legacy he has left!

Mr. Bate inspired me to pursue education and a career in Physics. I'm still working on wave propagation technology today, over 55 years later. Thank you, sir! Ted Clee, UTS 63

I was always delighted to see Derek attend Old Boys dinners, and was very sad to learn that he had passed away. He certainly led a long, full and accomplished life, and he was still sharp when I saw him at UTS events. Remembering that helps somehow.

Derek taught me grade 11 and grade 13 physics, and he is the reason I retain as much physics as I do. Scarred perhaps by having me as a student, he shifted to the Head Master role, as befit his august bearing.

I'll remember him for his unflappable nature and his understated but wry humour. My sincere condolences to the family and to Derek, thanks and goodbye.

I had the distinct honour and pleasure of being taught by Derek; working with him at the UTS Alumni Association; and listening to him give the Ode to The Haggis at the St Andrews Ball.
Derek was a marvellous teacher; a true gentleman; and a worthy role model.
He will be sorely missed.

Peter and I were deeply saddened to see this notice. Derek was a lovely man and a walking personification of the word "Gentleman". We were fortunate to know him and Cay for many years at St. Clement's Church and enjoyed sharing a table several times with them at Winter Ojibway Club reunions. Never having the skill or the agility for tennis I greatly admired his wonderful, masterful ownership of any court he played on and his perseverence to hang on the the courts at St. Clement's. Every time I park in the new lot, I think of Derek. An admirable scholar and teacher with so many talents which he regarded with great humility. Our condolences to all his family of which he was so proud. Affectionately,
Cathy Campbell
