Charles CLARK Obituary

CHARLES DAVID CLARK February 22, 1939 - January 13, 2020 Dave died peacefully at home, with his dog Sunny beside him, on January 13th. Son of the late Marguerite and Charles Clark. Beloved by his wife Mary (nee Kelly). Loving father of Alexandra (Dr. Nick Adamson), Sarah, Hazel and John. Proud grandfather of Bronwyn and Andrew Adamson. Brother of Peggy Ann Wilson (Ken Wilson). He was a graduate of McMaster University and the Business School of the University of Western Ontario (now the Ivey Business School). Dave will be remembered for his sense of humour and genuine interest in people and in world affairs. He was notorious for making friends wherever he went. Dave was happiest at the cottage in Dorset, on Lake of Bays, where he spent Christmas 2019 with all of his family. He enjoyed his career in the food industry (as President and CEO of Thomas J. Lipton Canada, then CEO and Chairman of Campbells Canada and EVP for Europe and Asia) and as Publisher of the Globe and Mail. He shared his enthusiasm and business acumen as a member of many business, government, academic and charitable boards. A Celebration of David's life will be held at the Granite Club, 2350 Bayview Ave., on Thursday, January 30, from 1-3 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Association.

Dear Mary, family, and fur puppies. I am saddened by Davids passing. The first time I met you was at my parents' house: Merle and Keith Porter. You were both so full of energy and had huge smiles on your faces. I wish I could attend the Celebration of Dave's life, however, I am unable to travel at the moment due to health issues. I am sending prayers and love to you all through these difficult times. God Bless you all.

I have literally known Dave all my life. Marg & Charlie were the reason my parents came to Dorset. They were all from Stoney Creek and did Guides & Scouts together. There isn't enough room to type all the great memories I have from the cottage. I am lucky enough to be making my own here in Dorset now on a permanent basis. My condolences Mary, family and Peggy Ann. Everyone is right when they say Dave always had a smile. I will remember him that way.

We will deeply miss Dave's cheery smile on Lake of Bays. We enjoyed seeing him do his quiet daily circuits of Little Trading Bay, and he never passed our dock without stopping to exchange pleasantries. That smile was twice as big when he had a grandchild or two in the boat with him. Our sympathy to his family.

It's many years ago now, but I will always remember a loud laugh, a big smile, my first water-ski lessons and enthusiastic cheers for our feats of swimming and fishing at the cottage. Thanks for sharing, Uncle Dave. My best wishes to Aunt Mary and your family, as you will certainly be missed.

Our deepest condolences from the Ivey Business School family where David was such an incredible contributor, whether as a mentor in the MBA program, engaging my EMBA students with his real life case experience, or supporting our research and outreach in leader character. David embodied the strength of character we speak about. He was a great friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

I only knew Dave over the last three years, but I always looked forward to seeing him walking with Sunny most mornings at Windfields Park. I didn't realize how accomplished he was (nor was I surprised) - I simply knew him as a friendly, articulate, and very amusing man who brightened every day I saw him. Safe travels!
