Sadly, we announce the passing of Charles Hayles on Thursday, June 6, 2024, surrounded by family, at his residences overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands. Charles Alexander Hayles was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on December 12, 1926, to Charles and Martha (nee Whamond) Hayles. In 1954, he married Marion Hazel MacInnes, and they had three sons, Richard (Diane), Steven (predeceased) and David (Patricia); nine grandchildren, Matthew, Madeleine, Kelly, Scott, Spencer, Shannon, Caitlin, Charlize and Emily; and three great-grandchildren. Charlie graduated in engineering from McGill University in 1952 before joining Imperial Oil, where he took on increasing responsibility in the forty years he worked there, ending his career as Vice President of Marketing. In 1986, he retired from Imperial Oil and joined Pat Delbridge in her company providing issues and stakeholder management consulting. In this partnership, the two travelled together helping large industrial clients in Canada, the US, and countries throughout Europe and the Far East. He married Pat in 1990 and became a much-loved stepfather to Elizabeth (Sam), Clare (Jean Pierre) and Janet (Peter predeceased); their eight grandchildren, Brittany, Janine, Paul, Tim, Tanya, Robin, Pierre and Chole; and three great-grandchildren. Charlie was best known for his love of golf, playing at St. George's Golf and Country Club in Toronto for more than 50 years, and for his intelligence and humour. Charlie lived a full and fulfilling life and will be missed by a wide circle of family and friends. In keeping with Charlie's wishes, there will only be a private family interment. Arrangements are entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home & Chapel, 4 James St. E., Brockville. In memory of Charles, donations to the MS Society of Canada will be greatly appreciated by his family.
