Charles ISRAEL Obituary
ISRAEL, Charles Edward (Chuck)
At Wellesley Hospital, Toronto, on August 7, 1999, following a swift, unexpected illness. Born in Evansville, Indiana, November 15, 1920, and raised in Baltimore, he adopted Canada as his home in 1953. Dearly loved husband of Gloria Varley, cherished nephew of Frances Israel, White Plains, NY, close cousin to Betty and Edgard Schwab, Northport, NY, Carol and Steve Hindin, Montrose, NY, and Tom Schwab, New Orleans, LA, he is also mourned by his stepson Michael Garstang, foster daughter Lorna Hahn and a host of friends and colleagues in Canada, the United States, Britain and Europe. Novelist and screenwriter; determined walker; demon Scrabble player, lover of good wine, good food and good friends. He lived his life with grace and good humour, he leaves us too soon, and his loss is deeply felt. Cremation has taken place, arranged by The Simple Alternative, with interment of ashes at Mount Pleasant Cremation Gardens. As he wished, there will be no service, but a memorial gathering is being arranged for a later date. Donations in his memory may be made out to the Writers Guild of Canada, In Trust, at 123 Edward Street, Suite 1225, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1E2.
