Charles MATHESON Obituary
CHARLES BISSETT MATHESON CPA, CA 1934-2022 Charles (Charlie) was born in Dunfermline, Scotland to John H. Matheson, MC, MA, CA and Jessie Bissett; and was predeceased by his brother, Hamish. Having done his training at his father's firm and his CA studies at Edinburgh University, he left for Canada in 1957, having won the Gold medal on the CA Exams to start his employment with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co (now KPMG). His career path (which he referred to as the "Matheson Tour') took him to Detroit, Toronto and Jamaica before returning to Montreal in 1964 as the youngest partner in the firm. He finished his career as Managing Partner in Montreal in 1989. Retirement was short-lived as he assumed the role of Co-Managing Partner at KPMG Budapest just as Hungary was emerging from behind the iron curtain. Upon his return to Montreal, he served on the Boards of Imperial Life and Desjardins Financial Security, was Chairman of the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation and was a founding member of Alliance Quebec. At the age of 6, on holiday in Dornoch, his father cut down some golf clubs to suit his size and he found his passion. He was an accomplished and competitive golfer and shared his knowledge of the game as President and Captain of both Summerlea Golf and Country Club and Mount Bruno Country Club. He never lost his passion for Scottish Golf and regularly traveled "home" to amortize memberships at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and Royal Dornoch. Through amateur golf, Club Tours, and travels with Anne, he managed to play 362 different courses on many continents. He had planned to travel next week to the 150th Open with Rory and Karen. He will make the trip and finish his journey on the 7th hole at his beloved Royal Dornoch beside the bench dedicated to his late father. He will be forever missed by Anne, his soulmate of almost 63 years; daughter, Fiona (Tamas); son Rory, (Karen); grandchildren, Nicholas (Allyson) and Julia Ronyai, Kaleigh and Rhys Matheson; brother-in-law, Donald (Francoise); and sister-in-law, Moira (Bill-deceased). The family would like to thank all of the Doctors and staff at the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Department for their kindness and care. If you wish to make a donation, his favorite charities were the Old Brewery Mission and The Matheson Family Endowment Fund at The Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation (3400 boul. de Maisonneuve, bur. 1420, Montreal, QC H3Z 3B8).
