Charles MCCALLUM Obituary
McCALLUM, Charles Douglas
Died on July 28th, 2009 in St. Peter's Residence at Chedoke, Hamilton, after a long illness with Alzheimer's.
Loved husband of Mary McCallum (nee Griffith), married for 60 years. Born August 18, 1924 as the only child of Winnifred and Harold McCallum, of Hamilton, Ontario. Proud father of 4 children: Claire McGrath (husband John), John McCallum (wife Kathy), Beth Cox (husband Steve) and Tricia Weatherston (husband Martin). Doug was also proud of his 12 grandchildren: Karen Fortin (husband Neil), James McGrath (wife Laura) and Heather McGrath; Jessica, Ruth and David McCallum; Paul, Megan and Tim Cox; and Thomas, Emily and Robert Weatherston. As well Doug enjoyed 4 great grandchildren: Isaac and Mitchell Fortin and Hayden and Keira McGrath.
Doug practiced law with Ross & McBride in Hamilton from 1949 to 1984 where he became a Q.C. and senior partner. He served in many Hamilton organizations, including past president of the Hamilton Naturalist's Club, past president of the Hamilton YMCA, an active member of Olivet United Church for many years and more recently a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church. He founded the McCallum- McBride Foundation which supports Hamilton area projects in conservation as well as care for women and children.
Doug was a man of many hobbies: a keen bird-watcher, naturalist and gardener; an avid bridge player and curler; with artistic pursuits in photography, silk screen printing and weaving. In retirement, he and Mary travelled widely around the world, taking as well a number of wilderness trips to Canada's north. His travels were documented in photography and written stories.
He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Many thanks to the supportive staff of St. Peter's Residence at Chedoke, St. Peter's Hospital and the A-1 Unit at St. Joseph's.
Memorial Service and visitation on Saturday, August 15th at Olivet United Church, 40 Empress Avenue, Hamilton, Ontario. Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m.; visitation at 1:30 p.m.
