CHARLES PURVIS Obituary

Charles Edward Purvis passed away peacefully, at Canterbury Gardens Retirement Residence, Peterborough, on Friday, March 13, 2026, at the age of 94. Beloved husband of 64 years to Mary Lou Purvis (née Lucier). Loving father of Andrea Magee (Kent), Lisa McBain (David), Mark Purvis (Nazli Attaran), and Matthew Purvis (Larissa Nituch). Proud grandfather of Kirby Magee (Luke Stevens), Adam McBain, Cameron Magee (Hannah Cinel), Ryan Magee (Lindsay Puls), Megan McBain, Emily Purvis, and Charlie Purvis. Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Culver Benson Purvis and Adeline (née Brulé); and siblings, Thomas Purvis, Maxine Bolwell, Mary Lou Hendrickson, and Diane Champion. Survived by his brother, John Purvis (Patricia). Charles earned his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1963. After several years in private practice, including with Hughes Amys LLP, he was appointed a Provincial Court Judge at age 43, serving in Toronto, Scarborough, and Newmarket until his retirement at 75. An avid follower of current events, Charles also enjoyed gardening, especially hostas and daylilies, and was known for his imaginative (and sometimes questionable) homemade tools, which brought much amusement to his family. The family thanks the staff of Canterbury Gardens Retirement Residence, as well as Nurse Susan and Dr. Brent MacMillan, for their care and kindness. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026. For details, please email: [email protected] Online condolences may be made at roadhouseandrose.com.

I offer sincere condolences to the Purvis family. I appeared before His Honour almost daily during the 1980s at the old Scarborough Courthouse. He was personable, compassionate and a fine gentleman and judge. May memories bring you comfort.

I had the privilege of appearing many times before Justice Purvis over the years. He was a wonderful, caring, compassionate judge who treated everyone with respect and courtesy, especially the accused. It truly was an honour to appear in his court. Sympathy and condolences to his family. He lived a long and wonderful life.

Charlie's colleagues on the Ontario Court bench will remember well his commitment to justice, his kindness to everyone, and his wonderful, often self-deprecating, sense of humour. Those memories continue to bring a smile.
