Charles TABACHNICK Obituary

CHARLES (CHARLIE) LAWRENCE TABACHNICK Passed away peacefully on Friday, June 10, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Born April 7, 1930 in Windsor, Ontario. Beloved husband of Rosie for 72 years. He was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was devoted to his parents, sisters, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was adored by his extended family and friends. He started his career in the housing business working with his father Morris at Morris Homes in Windsor. He founded Cambridge Leaseholds in the mid 60's, a very successful public shopping centre development company. He moved his family and company to Toronto in 1969. After selling his company in 1975, he started collecting art, travelling throughout Europe with his beloved Rosie, and building a world class art collection. He was listed in the top 200 collectors in the world by Art News, which he was very proud of. He was a trustee of the Art Gallery of Ontario, and donated many works of art to the museum. There is a Rose and Charles Tabachnick Gallery which was endowed at AGO as well. In addition to collecting art, he was an artist, and painted from 1987-1991, creating a beautiful body of work. He was very philanthropic and believed in giving back. He was a Zionist and believed in supporting educational institutions. Holy Blossom Temple, United Jewish Appeal, and the University of Toronto were among the recipients. He and his parents Freda and Morris Tabachnick endowed the Tabachnick National and University Park on Mount Scopus at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1985. He generously supported Baycrest, a research and education hospital, one of the world's top research institutions in cognitive brain sciences. Charlie has been an amazing role model, greatly respected and deeply loved by his family. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Rosie Tabachnick; daughters, Lori (Rob) Goodman, Karen Tabachnick, and Sandy (Steven) Moranis; grandchildren, Shawn, Mitch, Jordie, Dani, Jessica (Ira), Corey and Rachel; and great-grandchildren, Jacob, Thalia, Miles and Naomi; his sister, Bernice White; sister-in-law, Paula Taub; and brother-in-law, Stanley Finkelstein. We are eternally grateful to his loving caregiver Carol Pidlaoan. Special thanks to Faith Diana-Quidella and the rest of his wonderful caregivers Analiza, Jerica, Dolly, Lanie, Jovy and Joan. Many thanks to Dr. Michael Ostro, and to Dr. Ciara Whelan and her wonderful team from the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. Funeral at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue W., on Sunday, June 12, at 10:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Baycrest Foundation baycrestfoundation.org 416-785-2875 or the charity of your choice.

We met briefly but it was a real pleasure. Living in the same city, I regret not to have had more time to
discuss with him about art, real-estate and Israel.
We will miss him.

Having the opportunity to work with Charlie at Cambridge Leaseholds through the 70´s was one of the highlights of my career in the real estate business. Charlie was one of the founding fathers of the shopping centre business in Canada and mentored many of us who were fortunate to work for for him in those formative years in the business.

Lori, Karen and Sandy: Ruth and I want to offer our heartfelt condolences. There really wasn't anyone like uncle Charlie in my life. He loved life and found so many ways to explore it. He was cool - even when cool wasn't a thing. We are thinking of you.
Your Dad was quite a guy.

Our party leader, who was always ready for fun in Acapulco, could discuss more serious subjects with equal zeal and knowledge, he will be missed but thought of with love and admiration.
