Charlie LANE Obituary

CHARLES LANE (CHARLIE) Teacher, swimmer, traveller, photographer, and always inspirer, Charlie died peacefully on November 28, 2023, in hospice on his own terms after 85 years of great living. As a career geography teacher and department head for over 35 years in Etobicoke, he lived his profession passionately, bringing his students and often his family on frequent trips to far flung destinations. Always sporting his trademark Nikon for constant photos, he doggedly documented his travels first on Kodachrome and later digitally, often to the consternation of his subjects holding a pose for 'just one more shot'! Charlie broadened many students' horizons with exchange trips to Cartagena Colombia, and Baker Lake NU, and engaged in professional development with teachers in Africa and Central America. A great fan of the '4 over 5' year-long leave program, he embarked on several epic around-the-world adventures in his off years, effectively implanting the travel bug in his children, Adele and John. Only days after retiring, he jumped onto a plane to Myanmar and beyond. In 2000 he married Cathy and together they continued to travel the world. Charlie was a competitive swimmer in his youth, coached by the legendary Gus Ryder at the Lakeshore Swim Club. In the mid-80s, Charlie resurrected his swimming athleticism and became a stalwart member of the Etobicoke Olympium Masters Aquatic Club (EOMAC). He achieved many club, provincial, and national records for his progressing age groups, and participated in several winter swim camps in Margarita Island, Venezuela. As club secretary and membership leader, he inspired many members both new and current to realize their swimming potential by entering competitions and swimming relay events for the club. His omnipresent camera ensured that outstanding performances in the pool were captured and displayed on countless posters and in newsletters. Charlie's most recent 7 years included thrice-weekly hemodialysis treatments, first at the Watline Clinic in Mississauga and most recently at the Credit Valley Hospital. The clinical excellence demonstrated in both of these locations was outstanding. There are far too many people to name among the exceptional renal care staff who became good friends during those years. In his final months, the palliative team of Dr. Laura Harild continued to provide superlative, compassionate care to Charlie and his whole family. We are also grateful to the facility and staff of the Dorothy Ley Hospice who provided us all with comfort and support as they guided Charlie through his final day. Charlie died surrounded by the love of his family: wife Cathy; son, John (Cathy); daughter, Adele (Fraser); grandchildren Brennan (Anne), Eric (Mica), Alexandra, Grant (Dayl), Julie and Lindsey (Terry) and great-granddaughters Isabel, Florence and Carlisle as well as stepfamilies Ross, Jennifer, Miragh, Jude, Reed, Lauren and canines Benjamin and Toba. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Dorothy Ley Hospice (dlhospice.org) or to a food bank of your choice.

I met Charlie while a member of the Etobicoke Olympium Masters in the early 80´s. He was always fun to be around at the pool and meets. I was happy to have known him. After reading his obit there was so much more to learn about his life. What a great life he lived and what a legacy he left behind by inspiring so many.

I moved from Waterloo to Toronto in 1993. Was a recent university grad looking to join a master's club. When I called Master's Swimming Ontario an got Charlie on the phone: "why not Etobicoke?" he said. I joined and had a great few years with that club. A fond memory was of me and Charlie swimming in the Welland Canal 5k, both blind without our glasses and guiding each other to the finish line.

It was with a heavy heart that I heard of the passing Charlie. I had him as a teacher at ACI for both Geography and a GEO/BIO combo.
It was during March break excursions that we got to get to know him better as well as his family. I was lucky enough to travel with him and his family on a school trip to Cuba in 1978 which was a fantastic week. My sister's travelled under the watchful eye of Charlie (Donna travelled with him to London England) and (Brenda did a school exchange to Baker Lake in what is now known as Nunavit) both raved about their trips. We would all attest to the fact that Charlie made the trips more interesting with his insights to the countries in question.
My thoughts are with his family and I especially thank John and Adele for sharing their Dad with us and many others over the years.
Deepest Sympathy, Len Curry

My condolences to Cathy and their families. My fondest memory of Charlie (and Cathy) was the canoe trip into Algonquin Park. The last morning heading back to the vans to take us home we had for breakfast all we had plenty of remaining (orange juice and oatmeal). I think we were all glad to see the restaurant in South River after that. Was so nice to see him at the ACI 60th reunion as well. RIP Charlie.

Charlie was inspiring. A great educator and human being. Pivotal to my life was a cultural exchange with the Southern Tutchone First Nation in the Yukon Territory that he took me on. As a student he often showed his trust and value in me by allowing me to skip the afternoon classes and go downtown to resource libraries and developmental organizations to further my education and engage in the community. It was he who made my choice to also be a teacher. Many assignments I shared with my students were created with the line in my head, "How would Mr. Lane share this learning?"
His influence has been huge in my life. Thank you.
Condolences to his family and friends.

Charlie drum dancing Inuit style. We so enjoyed our brief time together. He came north again in the spring to spend a week on the land.

I will never forget being part of the Clyde River exchange back in 1979. On a Victoria Day in Clyde River, he shared Sparklers with the local children. Only Mr. Lane would think of something like that. Mr. Lane, was a very inspirational teacher, I will never forget, RIP Mr. Lane.
