CHARLOTTE REID Obituary

February 26, 1945 - March 29, 2025 Charlotte Anne Reid, 80 years old, living in Parksville Vancouver Island, passed away on March 29, 2025. Charlotte was born on February 26, 1945, in Victoria, BC, while her parents Charles and Anna Exner were posted in BC during WWII. As a child, Charlotte grew up in Hubbard, Saskatchewan. She often talked fondly about growing up in that small village where her father was the principal of the small two-room school. Later, in Melville, Charlotte attended Melville High School where she met her lifelong high school sweetheart, Grant Reid. They were married for more than 50 years, until Grant's passing two years ago. For most of her career, Charlotte resided in Winnipeg where she worked as a teacher educator at the University of Manitoba. Charlotte was passionate about social justice, saying, "we need to rethink the role of 'educator' and how ordinary people can do extraordinary things." Curriculum development was the focus of her professional work. She saw cultural knowledge going beyond tolerance, providing for transformative change. For instance, she coordinated a trip to Thailand where her education students completed their teaching practicum. Charlotte and Grant moved to Parksville nearly 20 years ago. Their home became a hub of activity, big enough so many visitors had a place to gather. They maintained the most beautiful garden full of flowers and majestic shrubs, spending many happy hours on their deck watching the resident hummingbirds feeding by their kitchen window. Their kitchen also hummed with new and old family recipes being prepared and enjoyed by all family and friends. Charlotte was predeceased by her husband Grant. She is survived by her son Tim, her sister Donna, brothers Allan and Bob. She was loved by all extended family and close friends. Recently Charlotte remarked, "One day I will join Grant and together we will explore the stars."

Very sad to learn of this. My Mother Ellis Bartkiewicz (nee Divine) was Grant´s cousin until he died. We have fond memories of Grant and Charlotte mostly from their days in Winnipeg, the food, conversation , and friendship will always be held dear. Much love to family and friends.

Among Charlotte's musical favorites were Judy Collins' 'Where has all the time gone' and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Charlotte and I shared an interest in the concepts of time. The Christmas after my son, Trent, died an early death, she said she would always remember him as 'the little drummer boy' who goes on drumming. Mel and Daphne

I met Charlotte when Grant hired me to establish a methadone clinic in Saskatoon in 1974. Grant, Charlotte, and toddler Tim visited us in Saskatoon, and I witnessed 'free range' parenting. Thus began a friendship that endured until Charlotte left to find Grant among the stars. I visited them occasionally in Winnipeg over the years. The hospitality and gourmet meals were extraordinary. More than that was their support for my wife, who spent about two months at the Winnipeg Health Sciences for treatment of her insulin allergy. The same hospitality greeted me on occasional work-related visits.
After they moved to Parksville, they welcomed me with my new wife, Daphne McDonald. We discovered they had connections with Melville, Sask, where Charlotte's sister, Donna, and Dahne had been friends. Charlotte's father had been one of Daphne's high school teachers. We were immensely impressed with Charlotte's photography and her miniature box collection, to which Daphne added an accordion. It was also nice to see Tim again. We enjoyed the lovely garden. The occasion was also memorable for the gathering of 25 or 30 eagles flying tree-top height over the back deck. We offer deepest condolences to Tim, Donna and the family.

My heartfelt condolences to Tim and Charlotte's family.

I was a good friend of Grant since high school and when she married him we became a group with Morris Sulatyski & friends. Spent many hours singing and partying at U of S & Toronto, Charlotte kept us out of trouble.

If you're with Grant now I'll listen for the banjo. We'll miss you Bonney!

My journey with Charlotte began as teenagers, double dating during high school, rooming together in Winnipeg after graduating to many years of a close friendship. Charlotte was a focused idealist who worked so hard to realize her dreams. Her organizational skills were second to none and took her and Grant on many trips around the world. I can absolutely see her comment about exploring the stars with Grant happening because she always knew how to make her desires real.
My sincerest condolences to Tim, Donna, Allan and Bob.
