Christine MACADAM Obituary

CHRISTINE MACADAM 1941 - 2021 Christine (née Harvey) Macadam was born in 1941 in Stafford, England, to John and Marjorie (Madge) Harvey. A cherished only child, she grew up in Blundell Sands, a leafy suburb of Liverpool, and attended Merchant Taylors School in Crosby. Her beloved father, brilliant electrical engineer, famously built his own television set and the family were one of the first in the neighbourhood to have stereo sound. On graduating, Christine attended Miss Foulkes Secretarial College and was quickly employed as a secretary in Liverpool until 1965, when she moved to Paris. There, she worked for UNESCO, and studied French at the Alliance Française. In September of 1970, Christine immigrated to Vancouver. Her childhood friend, Penny Nevard, arrived a month later. Jericho Tennis Club held dances, and there - introduced by Penny - Christine met her husband of 50 years, Douglas Macadam. Doug, a fellow ex-pat, hailed from Glasgow. The couple married in 1972 and settled in Burnaby, before moving to Kerrisdale. Christine ran Doug's successful orthodontics practice for 40 years, but her real devotion was her girls. Education was the priority. Whatever they wanted to study, Christine ensured her daughters had the opportunity. As a result, both girls excelled. Sheina, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and Lindsay, a successful film and TV producer, both credit their mother for their work ethic and determination. Christine's love of learning was a driving force as they built their careers. The girls remember handmade costumes each Halloween, strict homework time, and an evening ritual of cut apples and cold milk before bed. Christine's quiet, gentle nature belied a fierce determination. In the great Cabbage Patch Doll Riots of 1983, Christine - nimble and sporty - easily fought off the slower mothers, securing not one, but two, dolls for under the tree that Christmas. She was a lifelong student, always improving her languages and, in her later years, developing a keen interest in nutrition and health. She is survived by her husband, Doug, daughters Sheina (James Elliott) and Lindsay (Jason Riley), grandchildren Ethan, Charlotte and Kieran, and half-brothers Andrew and Malcolm Harvey. Her friends and family will remember her for her kindness and enduring loyalty. Her husband remembers a beautiful, devoted wife who cared for her family until her final day. Christine's family is erecting a bench on Jericho in her name, along the path where she loved to walk. From the bench, you can see the West End, where she arrived in the city, the Tennis Club, where she met her husband, and the beach where she watched her growing girls play on long summer evenings. She will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the fund for the Jericho bench via this link: www.gofundme.com/f/christinemacadam
