Christophe PREOBRAZENSKI Obituary

CHRISTOPHE PREOBRAZENSKI Christophe Preobrazenski, 71, noted criminal defense attorney and inspiring athlete of downtown Toronto, died Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital. Christophe was born November 1, 1951, at the old Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, the son of the late Ryszard and Olenka. He is survived by two younger brothers, Roman and Jack. Christophe grew up in the Dufferin and Eglinton area. He was not one to be intimidated or bullied. Learning Judo as a youth with his father and brothers gave him 'street cred.' Christophe spent his summers camping and sailing, which gave him an enduring appreciation for the outdoors. Meanwhile, his Judo interest deepened. Under the tutelage of Sensei Uemura, Christophe rose to become a three-time Canadian Judo Champion and won two bronze medals at the Pan Am Games. He later taught Judo at Hart House at the University of Toronto, and he coached the Ontario team. After completing his Masters' degree in Eastern European History at U of T, he went to McGill for law school. He articled in Toronto and was inspired by John Hamilton to practise criminal law. As a criminal lawyer, he was respected by his adversaries, and in turn he treated them with respect and consideration. He put his verbal skill, sense of humour and jousting ability to good use on behalf of his many grateful clients. Everyone noticed his commanding presence, enhanced by his booming voice. Christophe's drive and determination were legendary. He liked to win, be it on the Judo mat, on the running track, in an argument, or in court. Christophe developed a lifelong vigorous exercise training habit that started at Hart House and later continued at the Cambridge Club. Until a year ago, he typically trained twice a day. His running efforts peaked when he ran the Ottawa marathon in 2:52 as a heavyweight. Most people who knew Christophe remarked how he was "larger than life." He was known for his generosity of spirit and gift-giving. His enthusiasm and care were a constant in his friends' lives. He will be missed greatly by his small family, particularly his brother, Roman; his sister-in-law, Linda Tulving; his nephews, Alexander and Nicholas; as well as the Piwnik and Kuta cousins in Poland. Jonathan ('Welsh brother'), Daniel ('Israeli brother'), Giuseppe ('Italian brother'), Allan ('Chinese brother'), Yolanda, Elena, Nica ('Russian goddaughter'), Alejandra ('Mexican niece'), and Tomika ('Hungarian brother'), are but a few of the countless people who will miss Christophe. Despite Christophe's physical stature and attention to his own health, he suffered from a form of 'turbocancer' which has tragically become more common since 2021. Despite the amazing efforts of the Sarcoma Team at Mount Sinai and Princess Margaret Hospitals, the sarcoma metastasized and progressed at an unexpectedly quick pace. Many thanks to the palliative care teams at both the Princess Margaret and Hennick Bridgepoint hospitals who helped Christophe live well until he could no more. In keeping with Christophe's bespoke approaches to life, he wished for no funeral. His body was cremated July 31st after a small, private family gathering. A Celebration of Life will follow at a future date.

The last time I had the good fortune to see Chris it was evident he was battling his illness with tenacity and grace at the same time battling as the ultimate defender to keep his client out of custody. He was a true mensch who treated everyone in the criminal justice system whether you were a Chief Judge or Court Officer with dignity respect always with his patented infectious warm smile. May his memory be for a blessing.

What can you say about Christophe that hasn't already been said. Larger than life, always upbeat to the end. I met him in his competitive judo years before he became a lawyer. I competed against him and trained with him. He was one of the Fab Four in the 1975 Pan Am Games when we won 3 gold and 2 bronze medals for Canada. He was probably the best conditioned heavyweight i ever trained with. Whether it was judo or his law practice, he was always in it to win it. He left his mark in both worlds and he left a big hole that will never be filled. OOSSSS Christophe!

I have been devasted by the news. In the last 3 decades we have met in Ontario courts on numerous occasions. Chris loved people and his profession. His great sense of humor has always been evident. R.I.P. You will be missed.

When I think of Chris I think of the judo training at Hart House at U of T. Often during tournament season we would go down and train on a Sat. back in the 80"s. This was a well needed facility and Chris stepped up to the plate. Thank you Chris and god bless you. John Batten

Christophe was an excellent athlete, coach, mentor, advocate and friend. I was privileged to keep in touch with him over the years and share many stories and milestones. Our lives were intricately linked through both Judo and our varied work at opposite ends of the justice sector. I was honoured to spend some valuable time with Christophe and his brother Roman, during his final days. His booming and positive voice rang through me as we bid our final farewell with a warm hug. "Sensei ni rei!" "Onegaishimasu!" and "OOOSSS" Christophe Preobrazenski!

I knew Christophe from the courthouses, in the lounges where stories were shared, the hallways, and courtrooms. Christophe had an engaging manner, and a great sense of humour. He was kind, and quick to help and offer advice. Thank you, Christophe. You will be missed.

In the depths of sorrow, I am compelled to share the profound loss of someone who meant the world to me. Christophe, my mentor, my very good friend, has passed away, leaving a void in my heart that words fail to express.
Beyond being a mentor, Christophe became a dear friend, someone with whom I could share both laughter and tears. Our shared experiences created bonds that felt unbreakable. His ability to listen without judgment and offer sound advice was a beacon of light in even the darkest of times.
His kindness, humility, and selflessness were qualities I aspired to emulate. He walked through life with grace, touching the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. Christophe's impact on the world was not measured in grand gestures but rather in the countless lives he touched with his empathy and compassion.
His absence now leaves a chasm in my life that feels insurmountable. Words fail to convey the mix of emotions that swirl within me. There's an overwhelming sense of loss, sadness, and disbelief. Yet, there's also gratitude for the precious moments we shared and the profound impact he had on my life's trajectory.
In the days that follow, I know that grief will be my constant companion. The pain of his departure is a testament to the profound love and respect I held for him. But, amidst the grief, I will hold on tightly to the memories that now serve as treasures in my heart.
Though he may be physically gone, Christophe's presence will forever resonate within me and all those whose lives he touched. I will honor his memory by carrying forward the lessons he taught me - to be compassionate, to uplift others, and to leave the world a little better than I found it.
To Christophe, your light will continue to shine through me, guiding my path even in your absence. Thank you for being a beacon of hope in my life, and may you rest in eternal peace.
"In the midst of darkness, stars are born, and you, dear Christophe, were a radiant star that illuminated the lives of many. Farewell, until we meet again."

It was shocking and heartbreaking for me to learn that Christophe has died.
He was a dear friend of my brother Carl and visited him faithfully during the months before Carl's death, along with their buddy Joe M. These two brought us all much cheer.
I remember Christophe as a robust, intelligent, kind and generous man who also showed a caring compassion for my elderly mother before she passed on.
He would call to ask about her, or just pop by with a huge orchid plant to delight her.
I regret that I did not know Christophe was ill.
Gone way too soon and remembered by my entire family with warmth, affection, and gratitude.
Our deep sympathies to Christophe's family and friends from the entire Theohar family,
Ruth Playfair

I first met Chris when he was my student at McGill Law School. He was larger than life then, and remained so in my eyes over the many years thereafter as a colleague of the Criminal Defence Bar in Toronto. This was a man who was humble, polite, always kind and ever-so-committed to his clients. That is a wonderful legacy to leave.Chris will not be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend. Brian Heller

I met Chris in the early 70´s at University of Toronto. Not surprising it was at the Hart House gym. We shared a passion for fitness and Chris set a personal goal to become an elite athlete which he achieved. I had the pleasure of getting to know his brothers Roman and Jack and his late father, Richard. Over the years our paths would cross and we would quickly reconnect. Chris even tried to teach me judo! Chris was a loyal friend and didn´t hesitate to offer assistance whenever asked.

Simply put ... Chris worked and worked out. His law practice and fitness were his passions.

My condolences to his family and friends. His larger than life presence will be missed by many.
