Claire STANIFORTH Obituary

CLAIRE LOUISE STANIFORTH (nee Millar) November 19, 1961 - August 12, 2022 Unexpectedly, at Bridgepoint hospital. A proud Montrealer, Claire adopted Toronto as home after completing her Master's in Education (Psychology) at OISE, and devoting herself to helping people with developmental disabilities at Surrey Place Centre, initially focusing on children, and latterly as the clinical lead of the geriatric program, addressing a huge need in the community. She was a fierce advocate and defender of all her clients and made it a point to be able to see them in person, even during the worst Covid lockdowns. Claire had an incredible quality of always supporting others in need. Curious and open to new adventures, Claire's love and support made it possible for her, David and Erik to live and thrive in Germany, Italy and France before returning to Toronto in 2015. She was a dedicated and impactful board member at the international schools in Frankfurt, Torino and Paris. An avid skier and hiker, Claire streaked down numerous runs from Sugarloaf to Chamonix to Sestriere to Whistler, and hiked throughout Europe and North America. She was also an amazing gourmet cook, and a typical weekend in our household was highlighted by a wonderful Sunday lunch for adopted friends and neighbours. Through it all, Claire had an innate sense of style. Her father's cottage at Kawagama Lake, Ontario, was her true happy place, and she spent her last weekend there, with her husband and beloved dog, before suffering a massive, unexpected stroke a few days later. She is survived by her soulmate and adoring husband, David Staniforth; her loving son, Erik; her father, Dr. Eric Millar; brothers, Peter (Jan Canning), and Ian (Suzanne Walter); her wonderful, outgoing, smart and kind nieces and nephews, Will, Sarah, Rachel, and Markus, all of whom she was immensely proud. Claire leaves a wide circle of friends and extended family, whom she loved, and whose lives she enlivened. She was predeceased by her mother, Catherine Millar. A celebration of her amazing life, contributions and accomplishments will take place in Toronto later this fall.

One day my autistic uncle, who was about 65 at the time, with no autism diagnosis, walked into Surrey Place and met Claire for the first time. After speaking with him for 15 minutes, Claire exclaimed, "he's one of our guys!" Maybe that doesn't sound like a big deal. But it was the first time in 8 years of being my uncle's primary caregiver, that someone voluntarily recognized him as a autistic person and welcomed him, and was pleased to see him. Our family was so sad to hear about Claire's death. She was marvellous and really a shining light at Surrey Place. Thank you Claire, we will really miss you. Katheryne and Bernard Schulz.

Claire was a wonderful friend when we attended Concordia University in Montreal. I have so many memories of Claire and some of "things" we did during those years!
We were both passionate about Education and Disabilities. Her career was outstanding as she made a difference in the world .
As my maid of honour in the 80s, friend and partner in crime, I cherish our time together and the forever memories.
Our careers put us in different parts of the country and we lost touch.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of her passing. Please accept my deepest sympathies as the world is now missing an inspirational woman who left her mark on all those who were lucky enough to know her.

Claire was a joy to work with. She was larger than life with a neverending smile and a friendliness which sprung from her genuine interest and joy in people. I remember (I hope with some accuracy) her story about meeting David at a dinner party to which she had invited herself. She told the story about arriving for her wedding ceremony in a canoe. I also remember her preparations to go abroad with her husband and son and her bewilderment with German. She said she could not even tell whether they were discussing the weather or economic policy. Condolences to her family. I am sure the world will be a much quieter and duller place without the joy she carried with her.

Claire was an incredible human. I didn't get the chance to meet her in person, but she helped soooo much in caring for my brother as part of Surrey Play 45+ program. I will really miss her and never forget all of the support she provided to us!
Thank you Claire!
My heartfelt condolences to all those who loved her closely.

No doubt there are many families who had the same experience of Claire: that she was genuinely kind and caring, encouraging and supportive. We thank her for being such a positive presence.

There aren´t words to express what a huge loss this is for the world that was lucky enough to have Claire in it.

I was fortunate enough to meet Claire in the summer of 2019 and had the privilege of working with her ever since in collaborative efforts to support the Older Adult and IDD community all over the province. Claire taught me so much and I will do my best to share the knowledge she transferred to me with staff for many years to come in her honour. She was a true advocate in every sense of the word.

On a personal level, Claire became a wonderful friend. She was there for me through all of my ups and downs in the three years that we knew each other and I´ll cherish those memories forever.

I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with her entire family at this tragic time and I can only hope that the memories you have will help you in the days ahead. I feel so very lucky to have worked with Claire and to have had her as a friend. She was truly one of a kind.

Dear Dr. Millar and family,
I was very saddened to read of Claire´s passing in the Globe and Mail today. Having worked with Dr. Millar for many years, I know how proud he was of all his children and what a terrible loss this is.
My deepest condolences,
