Clarence PACE Obituary

CLARENCE WILLIAM MUNRO PACE February 19, 1939 - October 30, 2021 Clarence died from complications due to lymphoma on October 30, 2021 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Devoted to his wife Mary (deceased August 31, 2021), Clare dedicated himself to caring for Mary during her final years of ill health, the culmination of sixty-one years of marriage. He was born in Nova Scotia and never forgot his Maritime roots or love of the sea. He was a loving father to Munro, Andrew, Merala (spouse of Fiona), and Philip (husband of Chad), and grandfather of three grandchildren, Tyler, Quinn (partner of Julia), and Pace. Music constituted a significant aspect of Clare's life both as a participant and a devotee. Singing in the choir at Grace Church on the Hill and then later at The Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto gave him much pleasure. Clare was a professional singer who also sang in the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Elmer Isler singers and Festival Singers. Both Clare and Mary were lovers of the performing arts: classical instrumental and choral music, opera, theatre and dance. They were strong supporters of the Stratford Festival and for many years enjoyed time spent in Stratford at their second home. Clare started his career as an English teacher at Northern Secondary and Malvern Collegiate. The majority of Clare's professional life was spent as a valued counsellor at UTS (University of Toronto Schools) where he was admired and trusted by students and colleagues. Following his retirement, Clare and Mary enjoyed many international travels and spent more than three decades wintering in Barbados. Clare was known for his love of fashion, flowers, dachshunds and gin martinis. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street, Toronto, on Saturday, November 20 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

45 years ago, Clare made an incredible and immeasurable impact on my life and career, for which I am incredibly grateful. I shared those impacts in a letter to the family I hope they received, via the UTS Alumni team. We encountered one another with our respective spouses at the RCYC many times over the years, as there were several shared family birthdays in February, and our affection for the other remained unabated. So sad to know that will not happen again. A donation made to UTS in his name.

Clare was one of those "cultured madmen" Roberston Davies identified as integral to the success of independent schools and their graduates. He brought professionalism to the guidance function at UTS, and in doing so made many friends among his students. My fellow grads will miss seeing him at Alumni Dinners and other school events.

For many years Clare Pace was a dear colleague of mine at UTS. He was passionate about the school and devoted his life to its survival and wellbeing, always thinking about how he was going to “ put out the many brushfires” that flared up constantly. He was always professional in his dealings with students and staff and there were many occasions where I benefitted from his sage advice.
Clare was elegant in bearing, style and expression. He left his mark on many and was admired by all..
My deepest sympathy to his family.
Sincerely,

Maria Collier
