From the time I was a teenager in Toronto with dreams of changing the World and involved in peace activism, social justice and the environment , we would look with great awe and admiration towards Mr. Ruby . He was a compass and a gentle force in law which seemed to come down hard on peace activists over and over again. His legacy of social change will last and he continues to inspire even after his passing . He had a big heart that was bigger than his physical heart that I can still sense is beating in our collective consciousness . I am a Buddhist Minister and we say " A Cloud Never Dies " it just changes and transforms so truly the energy and love Mr. Ruby has dispersed into the Universes . My deepest condolences to his family , friends and colleagues and from our Buddhist community his love for the furry and four legged beings and animals is something that our community is so grateful for. Thankyou Mr. Ruby for your care and love of so many and it has helped , healed and provided inspiration and our next collective out breath . " A Cloud Never Dies " A great human being - then a great lawyer .

Rest In Peace, Clay. Vividly, I remember Clay like it was yesterday. I was 17 and decided that it would be fun to visit Yorkville. After a few visits, I sat on a wall with all of the other people. Clay introduced himself and asked why I was there. I guess I gave him such a lame answer, something like I thought this place would be fun. With that answer, he said go back to your studies. This isn´t a place for you! I may have come back a few more times, but will always be grateful for Clay´s advice.

I first met Clayton in grade 9 we went to school together we were great friends then and we have remained friends for all these years. Almost 65 years. When we meet he introduces me as his childhood friend. Over the years I would meet him at his office as he was interested what I was doing. Many times I sought his advice and just to have Clayton in my corner was the high of all highs. One particular time I told him they don´t believe me I will never forget he put his arms around me hugged me and said but I do believe you. He was like a best friend to me we had our own private relationship/trust we got along so well I´m a strong man today I rarely cry I am crying now for the loss of my childhood friend. Clayton I miss you so much. Rest In Peace

I was one of the unpopular people in society whom Mr. Ruby inspired and encouraged. As a former offender, I thought I had zero chance of pursuing a career as a lawyer. I opted for journalism instead. When interviewing him for a broadcast piece at Ryerson, as it was known in 2000, he set me straight and told me that there should be nothing stopping my desire to become a lawyer. 11 years later - and after much resistance from all sorts of corners - he was right. I was found to be of good character and at the age of 49 started a busy career as a family lawyer. Whenever I have rough work days, I think of all it took to get here but especially remember I would never have pursued my calling without his encouragement. The world is a different place because of his open-minded kindness and intellect. May his memory be a blessing to those who loved him dearly.

We were so sorry to hear of Clayton's passing. In Ecojustice's world, Clayton was an inspiration, champion, leader, mentor, supporter and friend. He was a staunch ally to our organization and a fearless defender of the environment. His service on these fronts ran the gamut from direct representation of our clients on key cases, mentorship of our lawyers on some of our top precedential cases including work before the Supreme Court of Canada, helping to establish our office and presence in Ontario, and, throughout, readily sharing his intellect and passion with us toward building strong environmental legal cases and victories (particularly if the odds seemed insurmountable).
Concurrently, Clayton was a generous host. In Ecojustice´s early days, when we were still Sierra Legal and until we outgrew the place, board meetings were regularly held at the family cottage. Clayton also invited us and current and prospective supporters to his home in Toronto, including on one recent, memorable occasion where he combined his support for Ecojustice with a love of wine - which included access to the famed wine cellar - in an evening which would become one of our most noted `friendraisers.´
Ecojustice recognized Clayton´s leadership and service to us and Canada´s environment by naming him an honourary board member, a role he held for over 20 years. We are beyond saddened by his passing and he will be greatly missed. We extend to you our deepest condolences.
