Clifford MALONE Obituary

SEPTEMBER 4, 1925 OCTOBER 8, 2008 CLIFFORD SWINDELL MALONE It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Cliff on Wednesday, October 8th at the age of 83, suddenly from heart failure at the Claremont Retirement Residence after a struggle with dementia for the past few years. Beloved husband of Patricia for 47 years who passed away in 1997. Predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Nita Malone and brother Maurice (2003). Sadly missed by his son, Kevin, daughter-in-law Mona (Hengartner), and his 3 grandchildren, Aidan, Sarah and Matthew. Fondly remembered by cousins Joseph Malone, Bernice Gareau, Ronald Malone, Olive Amyot, brother-in-law Vaughan, sisters-in-law Lise McVey and Ruth Malone, nieces and nephews (Lynne, Sharon, Gail, Ken and Sean) and the Hengartner Family. We have lost a true gentleman who loved people, life and his family. Cliff was an outstanding student, top sportsman and had a distinguished business career spanning more than 40 years. Born in Quebec City in 1925, Cliff was educated at Lajoie Academy in Outremont and Loyola High School (1938 to 1942). He graduated from Loyola College (now Concordia University) in 1947 with a BA degree after having served as a pilot officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1943-1945. Cliff studied law at McGill University, graduating with a BCL degree in 1956. Cliff had a long and distinguished hockey career in the 1940s and 1950s. He played his amateur hockey with the Montreal Jr. Royals and also spent some time with the city's RCAF squad during World War II. Late in the 1944-45 season, Cliff joined the Montreal Senior Royals and played parts of nine seasons with the team apart from his brief stint with the Montreal Canadiens. Cliff helped the Royals win consecutive Quebec Senior Hockey League titles in 1946 and 1947 and also the Allan Cup in 1947. Over those 9 seasons he became one of the all-time top scorers in the Quebec Hockey League. His business career began in 1956 when he joined the Montreal Stock Exchange as a Vice President. He left in 1960 to join the Canadian Chemical Company Limited as Secretary and held a number of executive positions, becoming Chief Executive Officer of Chemcell in 1966. In 1972, he left the chemical business to become Chief Operating Officer of Canron Limited, a company whose main business was steel fabrication and was Chief Executive Officer from 1977 to 1985. Cliff was also Vice Chairman of Parcap Management Inc. and United Corporations Limited and an advisor to Hurlow Partners. Cliff was a sought after director and served on many boards, including the Royal Bank of Canada (21 years), Northern Telecom Ltd., United Corporations, Canron Inc., Bralorne Resources Ltd., Chemcell Ltd., Celanese Canada Ltd., Microsystems International Ltd., Chairman and Member of the Canadian Council of The Conference Board of Canada, Montreal Stock Exchange Board of Governors, Loyola College Board of Trustees, Quebec Industrial Relations Institute, St. Mary's Hospital and Lakefield College School. Cliff will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, quick wit and friendship. He loved golfing with his friends and spending time at his Florida home in Sarasota. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and proud Papa to his adorable grandchildren. As Sarah so simply said on the news of his passing, 'I wish I could fly with him to heaven.' Cliff is now at peace reconnected with his soul mate, Pat. We are sure they're now discussing who will walk Sam. We thank Lynn and the staff at The Claremont Retirement Residence for their friendship, support and caring of Cliff. He highly valued his independence and he felt very much 'at home' there. A special thank you to Joey Apa, his caregiver and friend for the past two and a half years. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East) from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, October 16th. A memorial mass will be held in HOLY ROSARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 354 St. Clair Avenue West (east of Bathurst Street) at 10:30 a.m. on October 17th, followed by a reception at the Granite Club, 2350 Bayview Avenue. Cremation has taken place and an interment at Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal is to be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, St. Michael's Hospital Foundation or Loyola High School Foundation.
