Clyde SANGER Obituary

CLYDE SANGER November 20, 1928 - January 20, 2022 In Ottawa, his home for the past 51 years. British-born and educated, Clyde became a passionate Canadian and internationalist. After Shrewsbury and Oxford, he discovered the wider world as a young journalist in Stoke-on-Trent, Kentucky and, decisively, Africa. The issues of class, racism, and colonialism he came up against, coupled with Britain's Suez crisis, changed his world view for good. As the editor of the Central African Examiner (1957-59) and the Manchester Guardian's first Africa correspondent (1960-65), he covered a crucial period and befriended a generation of young African leaders. In Africa, too, he met Penny (red-haired and Canadian, like his mother) who brought him back to Canada where he continued to work as a journalist (Guardian, Economist, Globe and Mail) and in international development (CIDA, IDRC and North-South Institute), raised four sons, and never stopped pushing his new homeland to pursue a more independent and enlightened role in the world. Mentor to generations of young journalists and activists in Canada and Africa, poetry and dog lover, soccer dad, cyclist, he treated great and small - Economist and Glebe Report deadlines - with equal respect. Predeceased by Penny and his sister Mella, he is survived by his brother Jim Sanger and godson John Trotter; sons Matthew, Richard, Toby and Daniel; beloved daughters-in-law Debbie, Mary, Narissa and Catherine; grandchildren Ariel, Maeve, Malcolm, Claire, Tommy, Louis, Alia, Adam, Antoine, Eliza and great-grandson, Theo. We are particularly grateful to the staff of Colonel By Retirement Home who gave him such care and friendship in his last years. We will all miss his warmth, wit and generosity.

I knew Clyde in the 1950s in London when he was living on a barge on the Thames, and, as a 'cub' newspaper reporter this often included theatre reviews - His broad band view of the world and sense of humour makes me laugh to this day - his idea of driving (possible in the '50s) to the theatre from Chelsea would often require starting two hours ahead of time, since he would only drive roads with no traffic lights... briliant, when I think of it ... he lived every minute and was always aware of the road less travelled....
which, at 96, is still my preference.....

Clyde was an incredible man and a huge influence on me in many ways, getting me to subscribe to the Guardian (which I love reading to this day) , and encouraging me to write more poetry and to publish or post it, I was always in awe of his incredible knowledge and talents, and also a dog lover, so enjoyed every minute I had conversing with Clyde.
The world has lost an absolutely amazing man, one I´ve been blessed to know. Clyde had an extraordinary way of making people feel valued and that they mattered to him. I will always be grateful for his influence on my life.

My family and I offer our sincere condolences to the Sanger family on their very sad loss of Clyde. He and his late wife Penny were our friendly neighbours for many years in the Glebe neighbourhood of Ottawa. With his avid intellectual curiosity, Clyde would often have engaging sidewalk conversations with my late husband, Jim and I. He was a frequent contributor to the neighbourhood monthly newspaper, regaling us with stories about local history. We will miss his gentle humour- may he rest in peace.

I was mentored by Penny through grant application assistance and her determination to spread Global Education, and she was supported by Clyde. Together again, one hopes!

I first met Clyde and Penny in the dog park walking one of their irrepresible Jacks. I remembered Clyde's name from his many articles in the Glebe Report and was so happy to meet them both in person. I loved seeing them in and around the community and I especially remember a wonderfully chilled G&T (Penny kept the gin in the freezer) enjoyed in their welcoming home on a warm summer afternoon.
Clyde always spoke to you as if you were the most interesting person there, a gift not many have.
I'd also like to say we will miss Clyde's visits to the Glebe CC. He gifted a large painting to the Glebe CC in Penny's memory and it is a joy to look at and remember them both. He was always a wonderful friend to the Glebe Neighbourhood Activities Group and we will remember him fondly.

I worked with Clyde at the North South Institute in the 90's. He was in his 60´s but operated like a teenager - riding his bike to work in the snow, juggling multiple projects, making outstanding excuses if work or he was late, and mischievously misbehaving at all times. He had a ridiculous memory, recalling virtually any point of history or politics in perfect detail. He could write and edit like the wind, and his prose was a joy to read. He was a great pleasure to work with and had a fabulous life of purpose, service and joy and I am sure will be enormously missed by his family. My deepest condolences to the boys and their families.

Clyde was an outstanding Commonwealth citizen, committed to our great family of nations. His biography of the Commonwealth Secretary General, fellow Canadian Arnold Smith, will always stand out - as a memorial to both of them and their service to the Commonwealth. He was an inspiration to a younger generation in the Commonwealth and embodied the ideals it represents. He leaves a great legacy. Rest well, great soul.

I was a master student at Carleton University when Clyde was one of my professors. I learned a lot from him. He also suggested that I do work for someone he knew, which enabled me to continue with my work. Clyde was a brilliant and charming man, and I was happy to chat with him whenever I saw him.
