Conrad Sanford (C.S.) Riley, at the age of 83 years, died quietly at home in Winnipeg, on Friday, February 19, 1999. Mr. Riley was respected nationally in several business fields. He was a champion athlete and served with distinction in World War II. He was an outdoorsman and a private pilot. He served his community. Above all, Con Riley was an advocate for Western Canada and served his family as best he could. Mr. Riley spent his life based in Winnipeg. Initially, he trained with the Royal Bank of Canada and ran the Insurance and General Agency for several years. In 1948 he acquired Dominion Tanners Ltd. His close association with the Company now known as United Canadian Shares Ltd., continued until his death. For many years he was Chairman of the Canadian Indemnity Company. He was a long-time board member of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Montreal Trust and Monarch Life. He chaired the National Budget Committee of the Canadian Red Cross and was a board member of numerous Manitoba organizations, including the Museum of Man and Nature. In 1978, at the Manitoba Government's request, he co-chaired a task force that thoroughly redesigned the provincial government's administrative structure. Con Riley was a Captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery, serving overseas from 1940 through 1945. He saw action in Europe and was awarded an M.B.E. Before the war he was a national rowing champion in the double sculls with his brother, Ab Riley. Mr. Riley obtained his private pilot's license in 1960. He achieved a Class 1-A instrument flight rating and enjoyed many years of recreational flights throughout North America. He loved the outdoors, owning a succession of retriever dogs and serving as President of the Lakewood Club on the Delta Marsh for many years. Mr. Riley married Frances M. (Dime) Aikins on May 4, 1940. After 59 years of marriage together, she survives him together with their sons, Conrad and Dennis and their families.
