CORDELIA BURNABY MARIAN DINGLE CORDELIA BURNABY MARIAN DINGLE

Cordelia Burnaby Marian Dingle was born on June 9, 2000 in New York City and left us far too early on October 15, 2020, in Toronto, Canada. A bright, open, compassionate woman, Cordelia did all she could to make a positive difference in a personal way, with family, with friends, and for the world around us. She felt most at home outdoors, especially at her favorite spots – surrounded by trees in Algonquin Park, Ontario, at her beloved Lac Manitou, Quebec, near Long Island Sound in Rye, New York, at the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California, and at the Atlantic Ocean in Prouts Neck, Maine.
Cordelia felt deeply connected with her family and friends, who will always remember her as loyal, driven and purposeful with a sly sense of humor and infectious laugh. Whether she was tapping her intellect or creativity, lost in a book or socializing with friends, feeling earnest or goofy, Cordelia was always herself.

Cordelia moved from New York City to Montreal when she was two years old and became bilingual there before moving to Toronto in 2011. A voracious reader, her bookshelf was a mix of books in French and English and she sometimes read the same books in different languages for fun.

During the six years she attended Bishop Strachan School in Toronto, Cordelia flourished. Her teachers enjoyed having her in their classes, and she fostered warm friendships with her Speakers Union, Model UN and VEX Robotics team members, fellow athletes on the Provincial Archery and Field Hockey teams, and with all who belonged to the Global Awareness Council, where she served as co-head. Across campus, Cordelia was well-known and well-liked, a quiet leader. Cordelia graduated in 2018 as a Head List recipient; her absence has already been felt and recognized by the school.

Moving to Montreal to attend McGill University studying Environmental Development and Urban Systems, Cordelia showed her typical ability to acclimate quickly. She developed a wonderful circle of friends, embraced her studies, and found new ways to support environmental initiatives.

Two of Cordelia's recent projects reflect her unique mindset. She served as a McGill BLUE intern on a Building 21 project to consider Montreal in 50 years, post-consumption, with solutions in place for environmental challenges. As always, Cordelia advocated for connection and practical action. She focused on humanity and hope, envisioning a dinner party attended by a diverse group of people, all working together for a more beautiful and healthier city. She went beyond the theoretical to the practical when leading an agroforestry initiative at Cloudbridge Nature Reserve and spending five weeks in the San Gerardo community of Costa Rica, building connections with farmers and planting fruit trees for healthy ecosystems.

In addition to loving trees, Cordelia was herself on the water. Lac Manitou was a second home, as she spent summers there from a very young age and she learned to sail at American Yacht Club in Rye, New York. From early on, Cordelia shared her passions with those coming behind. It was easy for her to connect with children because she never lost her own sense of wonder. She babysat for family friends, became a camp counselor and co-head of the Canoeing Program at Lac Manitou Community Center, and served as CIT and sailing instructor with the Taylor Statten Camps in Algonquin Park.

Cordelia will always be lovingly remembered and treasured by her parents, Connie and Christopher (Chris) Dingle; brothers, Conrad and Charles (Chas); her grandmothers, Celia Ryan and Susan Dingle; her aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as by her childhood, Lake Manitou, Bishop Strachan School and McGill University friends.

A private service will be held at Grace Church on-the-Hill in Toronto on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, if you would like to honor Cordelia, these are the two official designees: One Tree Planted (https://in-memory-of-cordelia-dingle.raisely.com/) and student wellness initiatives at The Bishop Strachan School ([email protected] or 416.483.4325 ext. 1874).

To Cordelia's family,
I have only just found out about Cordelia's passing. I am truly devastated beyond words can describe. She was so special, bright, and kind. My sincerest and deepest condolences.

Dearest Cordelia,
We would speak about our lives on bus rides to MAC campus together. We both loved trees and were so excited about what the future could look like. We would talk about your project and you brought me to building 21. We would sometimes eat lunch together in the cafeteria in-between classes. We always spoke about how we had to meet up out of school and even started planning a dinner. I guess we were both busy and then, the pandemic hit. I am so sad we never got the chance.

You were incredibly bright and your mind moved at the speed of light. It was fun speaking with you because we were strangely in sync. You were a shinning star in every room you walked into, truly unique. Your laughter and smile are sunny and warm.

Campus, class, and bus rides won't be the same without you. Your presence will be sorely missed and my heart breaks writing this.

I was excited to go back to school in the fall and hang out again with you and Ari (the three of us were a trio on the bus, a really happy memory). You helped shape me into who I am today and you were a highlight of my first 1 1/2 semesters at McGill.

Thank you for everything and I feel so lucky to have known you.

Dearest Cordelia,

We are sending you all our love. We are squeezing our hearts and making the love pour out so that it reaches you.

We know you are here with us in spirit.

I meant to thank you for " Three Day Road" and "Birdie," books that you recommended we read when we had breakfast together in the winter of 2019.

You captivated our curiosity with the knowledge you shared about the Canadian indigenous people and their many struggles.

"What an accomplished, thoughtful, polished young woman Cordelia is!" I thought to myself.

And then I told you "this conversation is so interesting and vibrant, you are wonderful company. You must come to NYC anytime, even if Alexandra is not here, and be my guest!"

And you smiled broadly, lighting up the room.

We will miss you Cordelia forever.

All our love,

Sofia, Alexandra, Nicholas and Geordie

Cordelia was a student on my floor in McGill residence, and I met her as her floor fellow/residential assistant. Cordelia was more than just a resident in the building; she brightened everyone's day with her beautiful smile, her positive energy, her passion towards the environment, her iconic closet full of thrifted clothes, the pancakes she made during our residence events, the conversations she initiated in elevator rides, and every other amazing things about her that she brought to me and the rest of the community. I will forever cherish the warmth she brought to us. My heart goes out to her family and everyone who is struck by this great loss of our sweet Cordelia.

Cordelia was magic. To me, she always seemed just a little too special to be human. She listened to people so closely that she couldn't help but tilt her head towards them. She told stories so captivating she would get swept away herself. She smiled with her whole face, and she laughed with her whole body.
I wish I could tell every piece of the earth how lucky it is to be loved by her.

A presence as unique as hers leaves an ineffable absence. My heart belongs to everyone mourning the loss of the beautiful and fiercely original Cordelia.

My daughter Laura knew Cordelia from Rye and McGill. They had just seen each other recently in Montreal and shared happy memories from early childhood on Long Island Sound. We are so sad and send our sincere condolences to you. My brother died suddenly in April 2018 so I know this pain personally. May support from family, close friends and even distant acquaintances like us who remember your beautiful daughter fondly comfort you as the grief eventually gets mostly replaced by joyful memories and gratitude for the ways Cordelia touched your lives. Sincerely, Laura Heiss Varas, American Yacht Club, Rye NY

I was lucky to have known Cordelia as her Model UN coach and advisor. She was such a bright light, and always interested and engaged in talking about politics and world issues. She always had that sparkle in her eyes, and was ready and willing to lend a helping hand. I remember her Model UN SSUNS experience and when her name was called for winning an award. She was so happy. Cordelia will be truly missed, and she will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Reading Chris and Connie’s tribute to their beautiful, deeply caring and thoughtful daughter—the epitome of the kind of young person this world needs so badly—as well as the memories of so many friends and relations, fills us with sadness and regret that we never knew her as a young woman. Even so, she made an impact on us during our stays with you all in Montreal and then in Toronto about six or seven years ago with her intelligence and impish sense of humor.

Stephen and I will never forget the shock we felt when our cousin Chris called to tell us about the tragedy, and the overwhelming sadness we continue to feel for Chris, Connie, Conrad and Chas on this, the day of Cordelia’s funeral. We send our deepest love to you all.

Sitting here for the last week or so, after hearing the awful news - I struggle to finish any meaningful thoughts. They simply vanish into a blank stare.
But I am here as a friend of the family hoping you all are back here at Manitou soon, so our community love can give your broken hearts as much support as needed.

Cordelia was simply lovely and I will miss her always.

When I met Cordelia many years ago at Wapomeo, I was instantly taken by her joyous and carefree nature. When the Dingles later moved to Toronto, I was ecstatic to have Cordelia closeby all year round. Throughout the past 11 years, we have shared so many memories - sleepovers as kids, walks through the ravine, summers at camp, starting university together, and so much more. There will not be a day that goes by where I don't think about Cordelia's contagious giggle that everyone who knew her knows so well. I'm very proud to call Cordelia my friend and am sending my deepest condolences to all.

Cordelia was a wonderful person, an innocent soul that had a heart of gold and was highly intelligent. She was shy & timid at times but once you got to know her you realized she was truly a gem of a person. I have memories of when she was a baby, she was always full of light. One memory I have of her was when my parents, brother & I drove up from NJ to visit her & her family in Montreal back in summer 2002. Cordelia at the time was a funny little girl and I remember how she just loved eating avocados. She grew up into a thoughtful, bright, and kindhearted young lady but she was always that cute innocent little girl to me!! We’ve seen each other so many times over the years but not nearly enough, it’s always been a treat to see my Canadian cousins. Cordelia was a great daughter & big sister. She was also beloved by her grandmother & Great Aunt Bebe, I’ll never forget how they both always used to talk glowingly about little Cordelia. She really wanted to make a difference in the world. I’m proud to call her my cousin and she will be missed tremendously by all of us in her family. It’s difficult to comprehend this type of loss, but as long as her family is still here, one thing is for certain, Cordelia’s name & legacy will never die, and she will live on in the hearts of all those that loved her. As much as this tragedy has broken my heart, my most sincere condolences are with her immediate family, Connie, Chris, Conrad and Chas. I know the pain you guys are feeling is unlike anything else and you all have been in my prayers and I hope to see you all soon ❤❤❤
Sincerely,
Your cousin and nephew, Michael. I also want to say I know Brendan feels the same way that I do.

I was lucky enough to have Cordelia's presence in many aspects of my life; classmates at BSS, counsellors at Wapomeo, and students at McGill. It was undeniable - she cared so deeply about others and everything that she did. Her smile could raise your spirits and her constant positive and easy going nature always brightened my day. There was something so special about her and she was always true to herself. Her witty and smart nature made her magnetic and you always wanted to be around her. A beautiful soul that has left an immeasurable impact on those that knew her. I am a better person for knowing Cordelia. I will love her forever and I am sending all of my love and support to her friends and family during this incredibly devastating loss.

I was lucky enough to meet Cordelia a couple times while visiting my daughter (one of her roommates last year) at McGill and was struck, immediately, by her charm, sweetness and obvious compassion not just for other people but for the environment. The light in her was obvious; her laugh beautiful. Though I did not know her well, I knew that I felt better in the world knowing that young people like her were in it. Knowing that she was in it. May the spirit of her kindness continue. Sending love to all of those who loved her. Diana Weymar

I feel very fortunate to have known this thoughtful, compassionate and curious young woman, for the most part in her younger years. Cordelia was a camper at Wapomeo during my time there, and her very kind disposition was unforgettable. I again when I saw her on Canoe lake several years later and I was touched to reconnect. It was beautiful to see her all grown up and the woman she had become. She has had a significant impact on my family who have beautiful memories - she was my niece's guide on a 22 day canoe trip, and a co-staff and guide on a canoe trip with my daughter - I have no doubt her ripple runs wide. I will remember her as being friendly and inclusive, full of humility, humour, and just plain love - a wonderful role model. My condolences to Connie, Chris, Conrad and Charles.
