Coulter OSBORNE Obituary

The Honourable COULTER A. OSBORNE, O.Ont., Q.C., LL.D. (Hon.), OLY April 29, 1934 - April 19, 2023 We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Coulter Osborne, athlete, jurist, and family man. Coulter was raised in Hamilton by his parents, Clark Osborne and Mary Osborne (Vallely) and, following the death of his mother, by his stepmother Claire Osborne (Jenkins). Coulter's athletic talents were on early display at Hillfield College and St. Andrew's College, where he was a standout student and multi-sport athlete. He ran track and played basketball at Western University, where he is in the Sports Hall of Fame. Coulter was a starting forward on Canada's basketball team at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. He returned to Australia 44 years later to carry the torch at the Sydney Olympics. Coulter practised law in Kitchener from 1959 to 1978, when he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Ontario. In 1990, he was appointed to the Ontario Court of Appeal, ultimately serving as Associate Chief Justice. In what might have been his retirement years, Coulter assumed the role of Integrity Commissioner for the Province of Ontario. He continued working as an arbitrator into his 80s. Coulter was a family man first (unless he had a squash game). At Western, he met his match in Barbara Osborne (Mollison), his loving and devoted wife of 64 years. They were inseparable to the end. They had three daughters, Julie Osborne, Mary Osborne, and Katie Osborne (Michael Bregman). Coulter was an outsized presence in their lives and in the lives of his grandchildren, Annick Thompson, Luke Thompson, Coulter Argue (Maria Castro), and the late Ian Argue (2021). The recent arrival of his great-granddaughter, Paloma, was a blessing. Coulter was dignified and laid-back with a deep, resonant voice and an easy charm. He was unfailingly kind and consistently late. He loved playing and watching sports, misbehaving dogs, and Frank Sinatra. He was highly accomplished but uncomplicated. A gentle soul with a ready smile, Coulter made friends easily and kept them for life. They and we will miss him deeply. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Coulter's caregivers and the staff at Hazelton Place for their kind and compassionate care and support. We invite friends and family to join us to celebrate Coulter's life at the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club on Thursday, May 11 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., with brief remarks at 3:45 p.m. Donations in Coulter's memory may be made to Book Clubs for Inmates (http://www.bookclubsforinmates.com) or The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care (https://tlcpc.org).

Dear Osborne family, my condolences to each of you. May you daily be comforted with the beautiful love, memories, joy and laughter you experienced together.

Today, I was shocked and saddened to learn about Justice Osborne's passing. He is part of a documentary I have been working on concerning Access To Justice in Canada wherein he kindly contributed to by giving of his time, knowledge, insights and perspectives. I planned to follow up with him these many years later-- but events in life impeded the follow up. I appreciate Justice Osborne's involvement.

While he said to call him Coulter, I continued to respectfully address him as Justice Osborne-- a title fitting for a lovely, kind, welcoming man devoted to justice, fairness, equity, access to justice. Thank you for sharing this lovely man with Community.

Together we succeed!

Be well & enjoy your blessings!

I worked as Secretary for Coulter in the Court of Appeal form at least 10 years. He was a wonderful boss. When he was in court I used to come to work late because you could be sure he would have work to do for the next day so I would be there to get it done no matter how late I stayed to do it. He used to take me for pizza and beer at noon on occasion. I will miss calling him over the past couple of years. My condolences to Barb and the girls.

What will stay with me, I hope, forever is the way Uncle Coulter (I´m so lucky to have been his goddaughter) held his gaze, with a big grin and twinkling eyes, when he was trying to find a way to mock me without belittling even the slightest. He always lifted people up with his wit, even when we said the dumbest things. We was so kind and I believe actually did think before he spoke, which made all the difference. So it´s that moment, watching him think with an anticipatory grin, that I´ll remember, and will try try try to learn from! Love to you Aunt Barb, and Julie, Mary and Katie. I´ll miss him very much.

It was a privilege and honor to work with Justice Osborne at the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He was one of the most kind, decent men around and was so widely respected by counsel, litigants and the staff at the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He always took the time to ask you how you were doing and he was so supportive of the staff at the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the work we do. He will be so missed by all. My sincerest condolences to his Family and Friends and may he be at Peace.

Coulter was a grea tJustice and had a lot of time for his clients when practicing.Staarted as a novice in Tennis and then as athetically as he was wenbt on to be an excellent tenis player. He was always gracious. I had several trials against Coulter but again always a gentle man. A tremndous loss to his friends and the Legal community.Sadly he will be missed.

What a life well lived. I first knew Coulter through his service with the KWY swim team. He was a big part of the success of the team back in the 70´s with no bigger task than driving his kids up to Waterloo all the way from RR 2 Cambridge.
I also had the chance to help out at the law firm driving documents around, getting a peek into the legal world. Thanks Coulter.
Condolences to the family.
