D. TACKABERRY Obituary

D. PAUL TACKABERRY LLB, LLM July 30, 1962 - July 17, 2022 With great sadness we announce the passing of Paul Tackaberry from complications of ALS. Paul leaves his wife, Sarah Giddens, and their daughter, Leah Yuanyuan Tackaberry-Giddens. Predeceased by his parents, Nina Butler and Edwin Tackaberry; Paul will be much missed by his sisters, Laurie Lipinski, Nancy Tackaberry and Lisa Carriere (Jeff). He is fondly remembered by many nephews and nieces. Paul grew up in Winnipeg and studied music at Brandon University. He earned his LLB from the University of Manitoba in 1985. He was called to the Manitoba Bar then obtained his LLM in 1987 on a scholarship to Columbia University. Paul practiced law in Toronto with several major firms in the area of intellectual property, most recently as counsel at Ridout & Maybee. He taught IP law at universities in Toronto, Montreal and Hong Kong, and served on the editorial board of the Trade Mark Reporter and the International Trademark Association. Paul was an accomplished musician, playing alto sax, clarinet and piano. On YouTube he produced multiple "Saxman Tack" videos during the lockdown to entertain friends and family. He was an avid cyclist, gifted meditator and lover of the outdoors. Paul was known for his humility, kindness, and irreverence. He had a naughty sense of humour and loved making others laugh. Paul faced the devastating impacts of ALS with calm and courage, supported by tireless, loving care from Sarah and Leah, with assistance from a wider circle including Sarah's siblings Elizabeth, Ben and David, and nephew Ted Rawson. Paul's greatest joy was being with Sarah and Leah - camping, travelling with the Connell-Hills, making music, cycling and playing games at home. He was loved, and will be missed by many. A memorial event will be held at a later date. To honour Paul's memory, donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada would be appreciated.

Hey Paul remember when you and I hitched a ride from that bush party in Winnipeg.. There we were in the back seat of a 74 Dodge Charger laughing our faces off. You making jokes absolute hilarity. You will live on in my heart and memories. God Speed my friend.

Very sad to hear this, just today. I had gotten to know of Paul only through having been a schoolmate of Sarah's, and even then only through social media, but was enchanted by his magical family presence, and especially during the past few years, his YouTube videos and neighbourhood jams - such a wonderful antidote to the anxiety and worry of the pandemic. My deepest condolences to Sarah, Leah, their extended family, and his many friends and colleagues.

I am devastated to learn of Paul´s passing. Paul was calm, very modest and had a lovely mild voice. We first met in the early 1990s and remained lifelong friends thereafter. He served as the godfather when my first son was born and christened in the late 1990s. We had yearly family get-togethers in the decades that followed. Most of the gatherings were facilitated by the Connell-Hills and held in different venues. It turned out that one of our gatherings at Dupont/Christie would be the last time I would see him. Requiescat in pace, Paul. My heartfelt condolences, Sarah and Leah. My family´s thoughts are with you.

I have great memories growing up in St. James (Winnipeg) with Paul, whether it was playing music together, or just hanging out with friends. Along with Paul Hughes, I too remember the first 'gig' at Shakey's Pizza for free pizza pies. Rest In Peace Paul. Sincerest condolences to Paul's family.

Paul Tackaberry became my best friend in grade 2 at Heritage Elementary School in Winnipeg in 1969, and we remained friends for many years afterwards. Although we lost touch for a period with both of our international moves and what not, we had reconnected some years ago, and Heidi and I were graced and blessed with a visit from him last fall on his amazing road trip. We even got to jam together, which was extra special because Paul and I had experienced *together* playing our very first gig for free pizza at the Shakey´s Pizza restaurant on Portage Avenue in Winnipeg (just off Cavalier) when we were 12 years old in 1974. I recall Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Changes, and Takin´ Care of Business as a part of our nascent set. Perhaps Color My World by Chicago was in there as well.

I have no words, and am sorry for the loss of those closest to him-including Sarah, Leah, Laurie, Nancy, Lisa, and everyone else. Praying comfort and peace for you all. This is very sad, and we will miss him greatly.
