Condolences to the friends and family of Dr. Dotten.
I remember in third year of medical school the chief medical resident telling the six students in our clinic group that Dr. Dotten would be our clinician teacher for the year and we were in for a treat. Truer words were never spoken! Whether it was at the patient´s bed side, looking through the microscopes in the hematology lab or in a conference room doing a post rounds debriefing, the lessons we learned from Dr. Dotten are lessons that I think each of use still continue to apply each day as we take care of our patients.

I was a patient of Dr Dottens for several years. He always had a smile on his face and a joke or two. His professionalism made me feel comfortable, especially when I was stressed. My condolences to his family.

I'm sorry for the passing of Dr. Dale Botten. I remembered him a few weeks ago when I was teaching my residents some lessons I learned from him ! I wanted to take a moment to share some heartfelt memories and reflections on the recent passing of Dr. Dale Dotten.
Dr. Dotten was a remarkable hematologist and an even more exceptional human being. I had the privilege of training under his guidance during my hematology rotation in Canada back in 2007. It was an experience that profoundly influenced both my medical career and my outlook on life.
Dr. Dotten's humility was striking. Despite his immense knowledge and accomplishments in the field, he was approachable and treated everyone with kindness and respect. Our conversations, whether about hematology or history, were always enlightening and filled with his unique ability to blend medical expertise with captivating stories from the past.
On my last day in the hematology rotation, Dr. Dotten surprised me with a meaningful gift-a book. This gesture was a testament to his generosity and his commitment to nurturing young minds in medicine. That book remains a cherished reminder of his mentorship.
My thoughts and condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Dr. Dotten's contributions to the medical community will continue to resonate, and his memory will forever inspire us.
With deepest sympathy,

Dr. Dale Dotten was my mentor at the Wellesley Hospital when I was a second year medical student at the University of Toronto. He was inspirational, kind, a just a decent human being. He cared about teaching us the skills to be good physicians, and we will never be able to repay him for his expertise and guidance. Rest in peace Dr. Dotten.

My God, I was hoping Dale would go on forever! He was my teacher when I was a student and then an intern at Wellesley Hospital and he was as much of a friend as a mentor to all of us. I don't think I ever remember him without tons of energy and a constant smile on his face. My sincerest condolences to the family.

I had the great privilege of being a colleague to Dale at Wellesley Hospital for over 25 years. When I had developed Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma at age 65,he was my first physician to make the diagnosis and treat me successfully even though I was given a grim prognosis by oncologists. There are not enough words to express my appreciation.
Dale was an exceptional and inspiring teacher of new generation of physicians in pursuit of medical excellence.
My wife and I grieve his loss but honour his life and offer our deepest condolences to his beloved nephews and nieces. May his memory be a blessing.

Dale was a compleat Hematologist, and had a MONUMENTAL influence on my life!
I met him when I was a medical student where he was my Pied Piper into Hematology, serving as a supporter and mentor.
Subsequently I patterned my practice after him, and as a result of the curiosity and joy in the specialty that he taught, I have never worked a day in my life.

Dr. Dale Dotten was my Hematologist for the past twenty or so years, treating me for a rare disease, Mastocytosis, and all the symptoms associated with it. He was so wonderful to me from the very first appointment, telling me of his days with the cosmetic company Helena Rubenstein. I was a former cosmetician, and that's how that conversation began. He was so kind, compassionate and caring and allowed me to "cry on his shoulder" many times while understanding the pain of my health issues. I will miss him so very much, he was a friend as well as a great physician. Heavenly Hugs to you Dr. Dotten ....from me, Linda Parchment. Rest In Peace, dear man. You are already missed.

Dr. Dotten was an esteemed and highly respected member of the Unity Health Toronto Research Ethics Board for 18 years. He provided so much more than just ethical reviews, he provided us all with history, clarity, context and a story that all could understand. When Dr. Dotten spoke, you could hear a pin drop. Every member of the REB did not want to miss a word.
He had a gentle and light-hearted demeanour, always displaying kindness and warmth to new colleagues.
Dr. Dotten was a Renaissance man. He was truly passionate about medicine and all patients, not just his own.
He shared his love of the English language and was quick to point out if a word was used improperly, misspelled or mispronounced.
He taught us all so much and for that we are forever grateful. He will be missed.
May the light of his memory shine down on those for whom he cared and all whose lives he touched.

Mentor, Teacher, Colleague, Friend - These words are only the tip of the iceberg for Dale's meaning to my life. As a year 2 student at The Wellesley Hospital, he taught me the clinical skills that guided my career. As a year 4 student, his respect for all on the health care team during Kardex rounds really epitomized inter-professional care as as we know it today. His compassionate care for our patients inspired me to become a hematologist. His deep love for all aspects of medical education inspired the second aspect of my career. We worked together for 5 years at the beloved Wellesley, taking care of each other's patients, and I continued to learn so much from him. We shared a love of photography and because we shared the same camera brand, a discussion of the best lenses was never far away. Dale's memory was prodigious. We sat together at rounds on 77-7-7 and noted the peculiar date. We were together again on 88-8-8 and wondered what the future would bring. Our career paths diverged geographically, but on 99-9-9, Dale knocked on my door at home and said, "Guess what day it is"! Dale was a great believer in the value of history, medical or otherwise. Dale played an historic role in the history of hematology at the University of Toronto. He will be sadly missed and reverently remembered by all who were privileged to know him. My sincerest condolences to his loved ones.

Dr Dotton or Dale as I could call him was a smart and funny guy.
It's been a lifetime since we'd talk at a few parties. He was always surrounded by medical people, especially the ladies. He liked to sneak over to me, the husband of one of his nurses and discuss a love of his. Photography.
My deepest condolences to his family

Dale was an outstanding and compassionate hematologist, full of unexpected clinical insights who happily shared his keen interest in the history of medicine with everyone. He was a wonderful mentor and played a seminal role in my decision to pursue a career in hematology. Over the past 50 years, he inspired generations of medical trainees to strive for clinical excellence. Many of us have been truly fortunate to have had him as a friend and colleague.

To the family:
Dale was for many years a member of the Toronto Medical Historical Club. In early 2023, he was its longest standing member. He gave many papers even as recently as this past January.
Several years ago he presented the club with box to contain a gavel that the club prizes. It was his own hand made work that reflects his approach to medicine that people have described. Hands on, attention to detail, and made with wood with a rich history.
Our members mourn the loss of Dale.

Dr. Dotten came into our lives nearly seventeen years ago and the impact he had and the impressions he left will never be forgotten. He brought us hope in the darkest of days and later, his humour and gentle affect made the journey just a bit more bearable.
Dr Dale Dotten; a giant in his field dressed as a humble and wonderful man. St Mike's was indeed truly fortunate to have you in their midst.
Our gratitude and respect will never diminish.

It's so hard to put into words what a wonderful person Dale was. In one of my first encounters he taught me about ITP, and how in 1951, Dr. Hollingsworth from St. Louis at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital did an exchange transfusion with the blood of an ITP female only to have his platelets drop from 250 to 10. I recall his smile with this historical pearl, and how he said "this is really nifty". He loved the science of medicine and the history that came with it. So started our relationship with chats about the history of medicine, political debating, and the future of medical training. He inspired those who cared to learn; so many over the decades. He was a sincere gentleman to his patients. During the pandemic as many hoped he would self-isolate, he continued to come to work out of an obligation to his patients (because he "was a doctor, and that's what we are called to do"). He became "Uncle Dale" to my children and a cherished friend. We are only so fortunate to have had such a gifted hematologist who will be missed by so many patients and colleagues.

I worked with Dale for 25 years at The Wellesley in both Emerg and outpatients. 10 years after that, I came to St Mike's and one of the first people I saw was Dale. He greeted me as if I had seen him yesterday, joking and reminiscing about The Wellesley.
Dale was one of the favourites of the nursing staff. He treated nurses with respect and was always open and approachable. I know his long term patients will miss his skill and dedication

Deepest sympathies to the Dotten family! I will truly miss Dale's towering intellect, inquisitive and humble personality and his passion for hematology. I first met Dale as a pathology resident doing my hematology rotation, and was struck by his congeniality and his personal experiences mentored me in the complex world of medicine. Over the years, one could always approach Dale to discuss internal medicine problems, have him explain recent discoveries in hematology, but he was also a polymath, and was always happy to discuss literature, philosophy, history etc. I recently asked Dale, when he was planning on retiring, and he told me he wasn't because he loved his work. Dale was a passionate clinician who loved his patients. I will miss learning from him and will always reflect on his exemplary role as a master clinician, who not only wanted to solve the puzzle of a disease afflcition but wanted to improve his patients' lives. We have lost a great talent who has given us so much!
